Kick-Ass 2 is set to begin filming any day now, and with all the rest of the film's key players confirmed and in place, director Jeff Wadlow has dropped a rather significant hint that Jim Carrey will be among them.

The director took to Twitter over the weekend to reveal that the role of the Colonel has been cast, before dropping a nudge-nudge wink-wink reference to a certain rubber-faced star.

”6 days till we start shooting…" said Wadlow through the social networking site, "and we officially have our Colonel. Alrighty f’n then!” That'll be Carrey's catchphrase from Ace Ventura, right there. We'd say that's as close to a confirmation as it comes.

Carrey will be playing Colonel Stars, a gruff ex-military man in charge of recruiting and leading Justice Forever, a kind of rag-tag Justice League formed by the comic-book's motley collection of heroes. He also has ties to the mob gang run by Frank D ... Read more »

The Dark Knight Rises also passes $1 billion

he summer's two superhero blockbusters continue to storm the global box office, with The Dark Knight Rises passing the $1bn mark and The Avengers reaching a staggering $1.5bn.

The Avengers has now climbed to $619.5m domestically, which puts it third in the all time charts, behind Titanic on $658.6m and Avatar on $760.5 million. The Dark Knight Rises has a little way to go to catch up, sitting currently down in ninth on $431.1m.

The same two films sit above The Avengers in the all-time worldwide chart, with Titanic on $2.1bn and Avatar on a jaw-dropping $2.7bn. Something tells us that Jim Cameron's 3D epic will be hanging on to that title for a while to come.

As for this week's chart, The Possession is currently sitting on top of the pile after a $17.7m opening weekend, while Lawless is in second on $11.8m. The Expendables 2 sits just ... Read more »

Veteran stars opposite Chris Pine
Following hot on the heels of the first official image of Chris Pine as Jack Ryan, comes a new still featuring Kevin Costner as the younger man's trainer and handler.

Costner stars as William Harper, a former military man charged with recruiting and training Ryan, and he looks every inch the badass here, sporting a pair of wraparound shades and some heavy-duty body armour.

Costner's character may not be restricted to Kenneth Branagh's franchise reboot, with Harper also likely to crop up in Chris McQuarrie's Without Remorse, and Costner currently in discussions to reprise the role.

Without Remorse will focus upon the character of John Kelly, a Vietnam vet turned mercenary who takes it upon himself to avenge the rape and murder of a prostitute. Tom Hardy is thought to be Paramount's first pick for the role.

Branagh meanwhile will be directing from a ... Read more »

The number of cases has dropped to a three-year low amid the probe into media standards that was launched in reaction to the News Corp. hacking scandal.

LONDON - The number of defamation lawsuits heard in the U.K. dropped 15 percent during the 12 months period ended May amid the Leveson Inquiry into media standards and ethics that was launched on the heels of the phone hacking scandal at Rupert Murdoch's News Corp.

STORY: Prosecutors to Disclose Hundreds of New Names of News Corp. Phone Hacking Victims

The Financial Times reported the figure of 71 cases, as compiled by Sweet & Maxwell, saying that this caseload fell to its lowest point in at least three years.

Traditional media companies have faced just 27 lawsuits, a five-year low, according to the FT.

"Public scrutiny following the eruption of the phone-hacking scandal is leading to a lower appetite for risk for some medi ... Read more »

The son of News Corp. CEO Rupert Murdoch now controls the number two FM radio network in the country and is seen as less likely to expand his role at the conglomerate.

SYDNEY - Lachlan Murdoch has confirmed that he has acquired the 50 percent of commercial radio company DMG Radio Australia (DMGRA) that he didn’t already own from British media group Daily Mail and General Trust.

He made the deal, which further expands his media holdings, through his private investment company Illyria Ltd.

It’s a move which, according to local reports, means that Rupert Murdoch’s eldest son is unlikely to increase his day-to-day involvement at News Corp., as has been at times speculated since the phone hacking scandal in the U.K., although Lachlan Murdoch remains a non-executive director of the company.

Murdoch reportedly paid AUS$100 million ($97 million) for the other half of the company, which owns ... Read more »

And the third instalment gets an official release date

With The Hobbit becoming a trilogy rather than a pair, there have been a few changes to the titles of the various instalments, with the second film now operating under the title The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug.

The final film in the trilogy will now assume the original name of the second episode, The Hobbit: There And Back Again. The Desolation Of Smaug will open on 13 December 2013, with the final episode arriving some seven months later on 18 July 2014.

"We wanted to have a shorter gap between the second and third films of The Hobbit Trilogy," said Dan Fellman, Warner's President of Domestic Distribution. "Opening in July affords us not only the perfect summer tentpole, but fans will have less time to wait for the finale of this epic adventure."

Smaug is of course the name of the villainous dragon upon whom the dwarves wish ... Read more »

In September 2011, Azealia Banks debuted "212" and subsequently limboed her way into our YouTube favorites, then iTunes playlists, then hearts. A year later, the clip for "1991" is the fourth and final music video from the EP of the same name, titled after the year of 21-year-old Banks's birth. The glamorous new video is a nice juxtaposition with the Banks of a year ago, a production as shimmery as the rapper likely envisioned her future to be while filming her simple and terribly effective "212." "1991" feels like the motion-picture culmination to all the glamorous, colorful, off-the-wall Banks photo shoots magazines have been serving up on a monthly basis, set to the type of flow that has us continually considering Banks as much more than a viral video phenom. Plus, now we can add magnifying glasses to the list of accessories (lipstick, Mickey Mouse sweaters) Azealia knows how to work.

The low-budget black-and-white film, which centers on an adorable misfit, bears a passing similarity to Lena Dunham’s HBO series "Girls."

Noah Baumbach’s terrific new film takes a serio-comic look at the life of an adorable misfit in 2012 New York City with the verve of French New Wave film from 1962. Co-written by Greta Gerwig, who plays the title role with entirely disarming self-deprecating humor, Frances Ha is a low-budget, black-and-white production populated mostly by wannabe creative types that immeasurably benefits from the feeling that it was shot on the wing. This is a niche picture of great appeal that will score with younger audiences looking for something offbeat and smart.

While the brief opening montage of life in Gotham smacks of Woody Allen, the milieu in question is distinctly different from the comic veteran’s territory. Gerwig, who previously worked with Baumbach in Greenberg ... Read more »

The Master's trailers would lead you to believe Paul Thomas Anderson's latest is another incredibly intense film in the vein of There Will Be Blood and Boogie Nights. And it very well may be, but The Playlist also reports from the Venice Film Festival that The Master will surprise "those who expected some kind of Scientology-skewering treatise." In a press conference, Anderson boiled the film down as such: "I think we were just trying to tell a love story between these guys," meaning Philip Seymour Hoffman's religion-creator and Joaquin Phoenix's drifter. Hoffman eventually added: "I don't think they see something in each other, they feel something in each other." Sounds like PTA might have the greatest straight man/straight man love story since The Shawshank Redemption on his hands.
