Europa Report (2013)

Certificate PG-13 90 min   -   Horror | Sci-Fi | Thriller

An international crew of astronauts undertakes a privately funded mission to search for life on Jupiter's fourth largest moon.
Director:
Sebastián Cordero
Stars:
Sharlto Copley, Michael Nyqvist, Christian Camargo, Embeth Davidtz

Wise move on director Sebastian Cordero and screenwriter Philip Gelatt's part to conceive of a science-fiction thriller that is heavy on story and a documentary feel - two elements that make it perfect for home consumption (Europa has been on VOD for several weeks already). Genre reviewers have praised the work for its realism, thrills, and performances from its international cast. I guess the thought here was to release the movie in theaters right around the time you can see star Sharlto Copley in Elysium as well.

The Canyons (2013)

Certificate R 99 min   -   Drama | Thriller

When Christian, an LA trust-fund kid with casual ties to Hollywood, learns of a secret affair between Tara and the lead of his film project, Ryan, he spirals out of control, and his cruel mind games escalate into an act of bloody violence.
Director:
Paul Schrader
Stars:
Lindsay Lohan, James Deen, Nolan Gerard Funk, Amanda Brooks

Does box-office performance even matter anymore after your film project has been headline news in papers on both coasts, and the director and writer have moved on to other projects? (Note: Lindsay Lohan has nothing in production or development.) If it turns out that the movie is any good, audiences might be disappointed, right?

The Spectacular Now (2013)

Certificate R 95 min   -   Comedy | Drama | Romance

A hard-partying high school senior's philosophy on life changes when he meets the not-so-typical "nice girl."
Director:
James Ponsoldt
Stars:
Miles Teller, Shailene Woodley, Kyle Chandler, Jennifer Jason Leigh

The Spectacular Now features a handful of talent on the verge of a major breakthrough: director James Ponsoldt is coming off the acclaimed but little-seen addiction drama Smashed, while stars Shailene Woodley and Miles Teller are gearing up to star in next year's Divergent (Woodley's name was recently in the news since she was scratched as Mary Jane Watson from The Amazing Spider-Man 2 -- a project that is putting out a lot of misdirection when it comes to its female characters). Reactions from the Sundance Film Festival were quite strong, though they also suggest the mov ... Read more »

The Smurfs 2 (2013)

Certificate PG 105 min   -   Animation | Comedy | Family | Fantasy

The Smurfs team up with their human friends to rescue Smurfette, who has been kidnapped by Gargamel since she knows a secret spell that can turn the evil sorcerer's newest creation - creatures called the Naughties - into real Smurfs.
Director:
Raja Gosnell
Stars:
Neil Patrick Harris, Jayma Mays, Katy Perry, Hank Azaria

A Parisian setting, a kidnapped young woman dealing with her feelings of isolation? The art-film fan in us stops and wonders if this is a new project from Jean-Pierre Dardenne and Luc Dardenne. Perhaps they'll direct The Smurfs 3.

Xiao shi dai (2013)

116 min   -   Drama | Romance
When four best friends try and move forward in their work and personal life, they realize that trying to live their life's dream is more difficult than they imagine -- especially in the high fashion world of Shanghai.
Director:
Jinming Guo
Stars:
Mi Yang, Amber Kuo, Zhendong Ke, Rhydian Vaughan

Compared to Hollywood and other corrupting Western influences, mainland China might be more concerned with author Guo Jingming's flourishing moviemaking career, as he turned his suite of novels into his native country's biggest box-office hit of 2013 -- and a sequel was pushed up from a December release to August.

Blue Jasmine (2013)

Certificate PG-13 98 min   -   Comedy | Drama

A New York socialite, deeply troubled and in denial, arrives in San Francisco to impose upon her sister. She looks a million, but isn't bringing money, peace, or love...
Director:
Woody Allen
Stars:
Cate Blanchett, Alec Baldwin, Peter Sarsgaard, Sally Hawkins

Bradley Cooper almost signed on for a starring role in Woody Allen's latest assemblage, which finds the writer-director back in the States -- San Francisco to be exact, where Allen seems to be playing up both coastal and class issues as a posh Cate Blanchett tries to find her footing with sister Sally Hawkins in her shabby chic flat. We're not buying it on paper, but that's what we said before actually seeing the transportative Midnight in Paris.

The To Do List (2013)

Certificate R 104 min   -   Comedy

Feeling pressured to become more sexually experienced before she goes to college, Brandy Klark makes a list of things to accomplish before hitting campus in the fall.
Director:
Maggie Carey
Stars:
Aubrey Plaza, Johnny Simmons, Bill Hader, Alia Shawkat

Pitch Perfect and Easy A are the most recent, most successful high-school comedies, and we hope Aubrey Plaza's first leading-lady appearance meet that standard while delivering huge laughs, awkward moments, and creative uses of profanities. Maggie Carey, one of the people from Funny or Die Presents... directs from her own screenplay.

The Wolverine (2013)

Certificate PG-13 126 min   -   Action | Adventure | Fantasy | Sci-Fi

When Wolverine is summoned to Japan by an old acquaintance, he is embroiled in a conflict that forces him to confront his own demons.
Director:
James Mangold
Stars:
Hugh Jackman, Will Yun Lee, Tao Okamoto, Rila Fukushima

Pity that Darren Aronofsky moved on from directing the it-has-to-be-better-than-the-first outing for the Wolverine; Frank Miller's fan-choice comic book, which is the framework for the sequel, is rife with romantic melodrama, character building, and a bad/no-so-bad guy, Ken Harada, aka the katana-sword wielding Silver Samurai. By no means is James Mangold a weak alternative; it's more that Aronofsky's added luster could have helped remount the franchise.

Big Words (2013)

93 min   -   Drama

Members of a once-promising hip-hop group, now in their late 30's, struggle with regret, disappointment, and change on Election Night 2008.
Director:
Neil Drumming
Stars:
Dorian Missick, Suzy Jane Hunt, Gbenga Akinnagbe, Darien

Definitely curious about this drama because a) we love it when Slamdance movies get theatrical distribution, b) immortal rapper Jean Grae has a supporting role, and c) more than one review I've read noted how good the dialogue is. With comparisons to the excellent Medicine for Melancholy, director Neil Drumming's feature debut is being celebrated as an underdog release as well as a black film with a subtle hand when it comes to issues of race.                                            &nbs ...
