Xiao shi dai (2013)

116 min   -   Drama | Romance
When four best friends try and move forward in their work and personal life, they realize that trying to live their life's dream is more difficult than they imagine -- especially in the high fashion world of Shanghai.
Director:
Jinming Guo
Stars:
Mi Yang, Amber Kuo, Zhendong Ke, Rhydian Vaughan

Compared to Hollywood and other corrupting Western influences, mainland China might be more concerned with author Guo Jingming's flourishing moviemaking career, as he turned his suite of novels into his native country's biggest box-office hit of 2013 -- and a sequel was pushed up from a December release to August.

The Time Being (2012)

85 min   -   Mystery

An artist meets a mysterious and wealthy benefactor and their relationship is not what it appears to be.
Director:
Nenad Cicin-Sain
Stars:
Frank Langella, Wes Bentley, Sarah Paulson, Ahna O'Reilly

Look closer ... and you should see more than Wes Bentley holding another camcorder in Nenad Cicin-Sain's first film. Seems like the writer-director has fashioned a mystery that has earned favorable comparisons to both Dorian Gray and Great Expectations. It so feels like a fall release to us; perhaps the studio is banking on word of mouth to keep the movie in theaters until then.

Blue Jasmine (2013)

Certificate PG-13 98 min   -   Comedy | Drama

A New York socialite, deeply troubled and in denial, arrives in San Francisco to impose upon her sister. She looks a million, but isn't bringing money, peace, or love...
Director:
Woody Allen
Stars:
Cate Blanchett, Alec Baldwin, Peter Sarsgaard, Sally Hawkins

Bradley Cooper almost signed on for a starring role in Woody Allen's latest assemblage, which finds the writer-director back in the States -- San Francisco to be exact, where Allen seems to be playing up both coastal and class issues as a posh Cate Blanchett tries to find her footing with sister Sally Hawkins in her shabby chic flat. We're not buying it on paper, but that's what we said before actually seeing the transportative Midnight in Paris.

The To Do List (2013)

Certificate R 104 min   -   Comedy

Feeling pressured to become more sexually experienced before she goes to college, Brandy Klark makes a list of things to accomplish before hitting campus in the fall.
Director:
Maggie Carey
Stars:
Aubrey Plaza, Johnny Simmons, Bill Hader, Alia Shawkat

Pitch Perfect and Easy A are the most recent, most successful high-school comedies, and we hope Aubrey Plaza's first leading-lady appearance meet that standard while delivering huge laughs, awkward moments, and creative uses of profanities. Maggie Carey, one of the people from Funny or Die Presents... directs from her own screenplay.

The Wolverine (2013)

Certificate PG-13 126 min   -   Action | Adventure | Fantasy | Sci-Fi

When Wolverine is summoned to Japan by an old acquaintance, he is embroiled in a conflict that forces him to confront his own demons.
Director:
James Mangold
Stars:
Hugh Jackman, Will Yun Lee, Tao Okamoto, Rila Fukushima

Pity that Darren Aronofsky moved on from directing the it-has-to-be-better-than-the-first outing for the Wolverine; Frank Miller's fan-choice comic book, which is the framework for the sequel, is rife with romantic melodrama, character building, and a bad/no-so-bad guy, Ken Harada, aka the katana-sword wielding Silver Samurai. By no means is James Mangold a weak alternative; it's more that Aronofsky's added luster could have helped remount the franchise.

Big Words (2013)

93 min   -   Drama

Members of a once-promising hip-hop group, now in their late 30's, struggle with regret, disappointment, and change on Election Night 2008.
Director:
Neil Drumming
Stars:
Dorian Missick, Suzy Jane Hunt, Gbenga Akinnagbe, Darien

Definitely curious about this drama because a) we love it when Slamdance movies get theatrical distribution, b) immortal rapper Jean Grae has a supporting role, and c) more than one review I've read noted how good the dialogue is. With comparisons to the excellent Medicine for Melancholy, director Neil Drumming's feature debut is being celebrated as an underdog release as well as a black film with a subtle hand when it comes to issues of race.                                            &nbs ... D-Day (2013)

153 min   -   Action | Thriller
A team of experts dispatched to bring in The Most Wanted Man in India almost achieves the unthinkable ... until something goes horribly wrong.
Director:
Nikhil Advani
Stars:
Irrfan Khan, Rishi Kapoor, Arjun Rampal, Shruti K. Haasan

Something tells me whoever survives this action thriller will be around for a likely sequel, because you don't pair Irrfan Khan with versatile director Nikhil Advani and not leave the story open for a second chapter -- even if it seems like none of the characters have a chance of surviving.

The Act of Killing (2012)

115 min   -   Documentary | Crime | History

A documentary that challenges former Indonesian death squad leaders to reenact their real-life mass-killings in whichever cinematic genres they wish, including classic Hollywood crime scenarios and lavish musical numbers.
Directors:
Joshua Oppenheimer | Anonymous | Christine Cynn
Stars:
Haji Anif, Syamsul Arifin, Sakhyan Asmara, Anwars Congo

Joshua Oppenheimer's documentary might prove to be the toughest sit this summer, and the most written about films of the year. After its debut at Telluride, Werner Herzog and Errol Morris signed on as executive producers, bringing added awareness to a project almost ten years in the making (Oppenheimer has been working in Indonesia since early last decade). We're bracing for the effect of going back in time with Anwar Congo and his "movie theatre gangster" ... Read more »

Blackfish (2013)

Certificate PG-13 83 min   -   Documentary

Notorious killer whale Tilikum is responsible for the deaths of three individuals, including a top killer whale trainer. Blackfish shows the sometimes devastating consequences of keeping such intelligent and sentient creatures in captivity.
Director:
Gabriela Cowperthwaite
Stars:
Tilikum, Dave Duffus, Samantha Berg, Dean Gomersall

It's a documentary showdown at the box office this weekend, with The Act of Killing and this, Gabriela Cowperthwaite's searing indictment of Sea World's treatment of animals in captivity, that was made with the cooperation of former trainers who could no longer remain silent in the wake of Dawn Brancheau's death.

OVIES THRILLER,  Only God Forgives (2013)

Certificate R 90 min   -   Crime | Drama | Thriller

Julian, a drug-smuggler thriving in Bangkok's criminal underworld, sees his life get even more complicated when his mother compels him to find and kill whoever is responsible for his brother's recent death.
Director:
Nicolas Winding Refn
Stars:
Ryan Gosling, Kristin Scott Thomas, Vithaya Pansringarm, Gordon Brown

The reception for Ryan Gosling's reunion with his Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn hasn't been as rapturous this time around, though most everyone can agree that Refn is one of the most visually aware filmmakers working today. Chances are if Refn's fewer-words/more-tones approach has worked for you in the past -- like the audience who turned Valhalla Rising into a VOD phenomenon -- then OGF's saturated ultraviolence will appease your thirst for a batter ... Girl Most Likely (2012)

Certificate PG-13 103 min   -   Comedy

A failed New York playwright awkwardly navigates the transition from Next Big Thing to Last Year's News.
Directors:
Shari Springer Berman | Robert Pulcini
Stars:
Kristen Wiig, Annette Bening, Matt Dillon, Darren Criss

A lot has been said about Kristen Wiig's cautious (?) and/or strategic (?) post-Bridesmaids choices, and her partnership here with American Splendor co-directors Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini definitely has indie-film tongues flapping about. The story seems a bit like Young Adult without the obsessive-love component -- a mid-life crisis in a vacuum, perhaps. Kristen Wiig can turn a single word into a laugh, so her mother-daughter banter with Annette Bening ought to be hysterical.

The Conjuring (2013)

Certificate R 112 min   -   Biography | Horror | Thriller

Paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren work to help a family terrorized by a dark presence in their farmhouse.
Director:
James Wan
Stars:
Patrick Wilson, Vera Farmiga, Ron Livingston, Lili Taylor

Patrick Wilson has two movies coming out this year, and in both of them he'll play the patriarch of a haunted family. To make the projects seem even more inseparable, Saw's James Wan directs them both. Sure, Insidious: Capitolul 2 has a hit first movie to build from, but The Conjuring features Mackenzie Foy, aka Renesmee - Bella and Edward Cullen's offspring who we think might be 2x scarier than the kind of evil presence that would set its sights on a farmhouse.

Turbo (2013)

Certificate PG 96 min   -   Animation | Adventure | Comedy | Family | Sport

A freak accident might just help an everyday garden snail achieve his biggest dream: winning the Indy 500.
Director:
David Soren
Stars:
Ryan Reynolds, Paul Giamatti, Maya Rudolph, Samuel L. Jackson

While there's plenty going on behind the scenes at DreamWorks Animation, creatively they've been running smoothly for the better part of the last decade and they're cranking out at least two worldwide hits per year. So it's easy for the studio to attract top-tier voice talent as they promote from within; in this case, storyboard vet David Soren ascends to the director's chair, and he's had a hand in the screenplay as well. Until we hear more, all we can picture is Cars with snails.

R.I.P.D. (2013)

Certificate PG-13 96 min   -   Action | Comedy | Crime | Fantasy

A recently slain cop joins a team of undead police officers working for the Rest in Peace Department and tries to find the man who murdered him.
Director:
Robert Schwentke
Stars:
Ryan Reynolds, Jeff Bridges, Mary-Louise Parker, Kevin Bacon

Let's see if Greu de pensionat director Robert Schwentke can turn another offbeat graphic novel into a box-office hit. Love the notion of Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges starring together; though they're decades apart, both actors buffer wisecracking dialogue with undeniable charm. However, the yellow flag here is the presence of screenwriting team Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi, responsible for Æon Flux and -- more recently and even worse -- Infruntarea titanilor. Our main fear is the story's inherent weirdness won't translate for mainstream audiences ... Read more »

Red 2 (2013)

Certificate PG-13 116 min   -   Action | Comedy | Crime | Thriller

Retired C.I.A. agent Frank Moses reunites his unlikely team of elite operatives for a global quest to track down a missing portable nuclear device.
Director:
Dean Parisot
Stars:
Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, John Malkovich, Anthony Hopkins

With Byung-hun Lee joining Bruce Willis for the sequel to the unexpected blockbuster, Red 2 feels a bit like a more-fun version of the upcoming G.I. Joe movie. We will miss Morgan Freeman (whose characters normally never die), but welcome Anthony Hopkins to what could be the truest definition of a popcorn movie.

Pawn Shop Chronicles (2013)

Certificate R 112 min   -   Comedy | Crime | Drama

A missing wedding ring leads to a wild-goose chase involving meth addicts, skinheads and an Elvis impersonator.
Director:
Wayne Kramer
Stars:
Paul Walker, Norman Reedus, Elijah Wood, Brendan Fraser

Several years ago Paul Walker teamed up with filmmaker Wayne Kramer for Între focuri, a thriller that was so head-scratchingly bonkers it was hard to dismiss entirely. We're betting that movie has earned some degree of cult status since the director and star have reunited for another seemingly out-there dark adventure.

Killing Season (2013)

Certificate R 91 min   -   Action | Drama | Thriller

Two veterans of the Bosnian War -- one American, one Serbian -- find their unlikely friendship turn tense with one of them reveals their true intentions.
Director:
Mark Steven Johnson
Stars:
Robert De Niro, John Travolta, Milo Ventimiglia, Elizabeth Olin

The idea of John Travolta playing a Serbian war veteran should really be a topic of greater discussion, and something tells me it won't matter which character survives these events, since the focus will be on Travolta and De Niro's commitment to questionable career choices.

Viola (2012)

65 min   -   Drama

A group of actresses performing in a production of Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night" get caught up in a web of romantic intrigue and revelation.
Director:
Matías Piñeiro
Stars:
María Villar, Alessio Rigo de Righi, Agustina Muñoz, Elisa Carricajo

Argentine director Matias Pineiro's new film is making a big noise in small circles, and though it won't ever see a wide release, we imagine this weekend will see the drama score with New York City audiences. The Cinema Guild, the distributor here, just experienced this with Jem Cohen's Museum Hours.

A documentary that exposes what corporations and governments learn about people through Internet and cell phone usage, and what can be done about it ... if anything.
Director:
Cullen Hoback
Stars:
Max Schrem, Moby, Mark Zuckerberg, Raymond Kurzweil

This documentary might not make the biggest inroads theatrically, but don't be surprised if the topical nature of Cullen Hoback's documentary finds a wide audience in time. People on any side of the privacy debate should find something to stoke their disbelief, paranoia, what have you. RIP 4th Amendment.

Gwen Stefani Is the Definition of Glowing

Gwen Stefani looked gorgeous and glowing while on her way to a friend's baby shower in LA on Sunday. She showed off her growing baby bump in a strapless dress and accessorized with a pretty flower crown. Gwen was joined by her husband, Gavin Rossdale, for the event and met up with her No Doubt bandmate Tony Kanal and his daughter, Coco, before heading inside. Gwen is just one of many pregnant celebrities in Hollywood right now, and we've been seeing a lot of her belly since she silently confirmed her pregnancy last month. The singer stepped out over the weekend in a bump-hugging yellow dress, and before that, she was dressed up as a princess while bringing her sons, Kingston and Zuma, trick-or-treating on Halloween.

Kristen Stewart Channels Her Inner Student

Kristen Stewart was spotted on the set of her new indie film, Anesthesia, in NYC on Monday, just days after she and Robert Pattinson met up in LA. Bundled up in a sweater, a beanie, and cropped pants that revealed a pair of striped socks, Kristen carried a backpack while filming. The movie follows a group of New Yorkers whose lives are affected by a philosophy professor, and Kristen's set to be shooting the film for a few days.

Over the past few months, the actress has been filming scenes for Camp X-Ray and Sils Maria. It's been a busy time for Kristen, and last week, she and her ex-boyfriend Robert Pattinson were seen together for the first time in nearly five months. It's the first time they've been spotted together since their breakup, and Kristen was driving her blue truck while Rob followed closely behind in his white Jeep.

Jennifer Aniston Has Cut Her Hair - Exclusive Pics!

We have exclusive pictures of Jennifer Aniston's drastic new haircut! The actress, whose locks have long been an inspiration for women everywhere, stepped out for an appointment in LA on Monday showing off her short new 'do — doesn't it kind of take you back to her Friends days circa 2001? Coincidentally, Jen spilled the beans about her bob to POPSUGAR Beauty last week. She told us, "It’s short! It’s at my jawline and a little shorter in the back." She also told us her motivation: "I was just ready for a change. I was ready for something new, to get it out of my face, so I could have a bit of an easier go at it." Jennifer also shared a funny throw-back hair habit, telling us she usually keeps her hair "up in a scrunchie of some sort!"

Drew Barrymore Is Pregnant, Expecting Second Child With Husband Will Kopelman; See Her Bump!

Olive Barrymore Kopelman is going to be a big sister! The Hollywood tot's famous mom, Drew Barrymore, is pregnant again, her rep confirms to Us Weekly. The baby-to-be is the second for the actress-producer, 38, and husband Will Kopelman, whose daughter Olive is just 13 months old.

Although Barrymore's rep had no immediate comment, there was ample evidence over the weekend: The former child star was among the attendees at the LACMA Art+Film Gala honoring Martin Scorcese and David Hockney on Saturday, Nov. 2, and Barrymore's long, flowing dress seemed to strategically designed to conceal a burgeoning bump.

The Real Housewives of Orange County Shocker: Lydia McLaughlin Reveals She Will Not Return for Season 9

And another one bites the dust.

Well, we can't imagine that there's much dust in the sparkling homes of The Real Housewives of Orange Country—but you get what we mean. After just one season on the smash Bravo hit, Lydia McLaughlin has announced that she will not be returning for the reality series' ninth season.

The Canadian native reveals that her departure from the show is "bittersweet" but she's ready to move on to the next chapter in her lavish life. "I compare it to breaking up with a boyfriend you know you're not going to end up with—it's hard, but overall you know you're doing the right thing," McLaughlin tells Us Weekly, who was the first to report the news.
