The Iceman (2012) Certificate R 105 min - Biography | Crime | Drama The true story of Richard Kuklinski, the notorious contract killer and family man. When finally arrested in 1986, neither his wife nor daughters have any clue about his real profession. Director: Ariel Vromen Stars: Michael Shannon, Chris Evans, James Franco, Winona Ryder Just think: When Man of Steel: Eroul makes Michael Shannon a household name, people will be able to sift through his other films and find gems like this true story of a husband, father, sociopath, and killer. We hear the director makes a wise decision to keep the focus on Shannon, and that David Schwimmer (who is piecing together an admirable indie-film resume) is barely recognizable in his role. &nbs

42 (2013) Certificate PG-13 128 min - Biography | Drama | Sport The life story of Jackie Robinson and his history-making signing with the Brooklyn Dodgers under the guidance of team executive Branch Rickey. Director: Brian Helgeland Stars: Chadwick Boseman, T.R. Knight, Harrison Ford, Nicole Beharie Brian Helgeland excels with serious drama, especially as a screenwriter (L.A. Confidential and Mystic River come to mind), so I am looking forward to what he does with this landmark sports story as its writer/director. Of course it's a huge undertaking for the relatively unknown Chadwick Boseman, and a major casting risk on the studio's part, but that makes us want to root even harder for everyone involved. &nbs

Leonie (2010) Certificate PG-13 102 min - Biography | Drama A film about the life and relationships of the early 20th American educator, editor, and journalist Leonie Gilmour, the mother of the acclaimed artist and architect Isamu Noguchi. Director: Hisako Matsui Stars: Emily Mortimer, Kazuko Yoshiyuki, Shidô Nakamura, Christina Hendricks Reads like Hisako Matsui had an incredibly challenging time making this story, what with having to depict what American and Japanese societies looked like a century ago, and we understand the Isamu Noguchi Foundation declined her any assistance. Overall awareness of the film seems rather low, but the presence of Christina Hendricks and Emily Mortimer should help achieve some home-screen longevity.
