Passion (2012) Certificate R 102 min - Crime | Drama | Mystery | Thriller The rivalry between the manipulative boss of an advertising agency and her talented protégée escalates from stealing credit to public humiliation to murder. Director: Brian De Palma Stars: Rachel McAdams, Noomi Rapace, Karoline Herfurth, Paul Anderson No surprise the reviews are divided for Brian de Palma's remake of Alain Corneau's final film, Crime d'amour. The icy story is certainly not feminist, which is hard to reconcile as you watch Rachel McAdams and Noomi Rapace try to eat one another alive. So toggle off your ethics and enjoy, I guess. &nbs

Breaking the Girls (2013) 83 min - Crime | Thriller Sara, a college student who was slandered by a classmate, finds herself framed for murder by Alex, who initially proposed the perfect, untraceable crime. Director: Jamie Babbit Stars: Agnes Bruckner, Madeline Zima, Shawn Ashmore, Kate Levering Personally, Jamie Babbit's movies never push it far enough for me, whether she's working in comedy or thriller mode, and nowhere have I read any review that says Breaking the Girls does a good job at depicting what it takes to be the last lesbian co-ed standing here. &n

Graceland (2012) 84 min - Crime | Thriller When a kidnapping goes wrong, a desperate father risks everything to save his daughter from the men who hold her captive. Director: Ron Morales Stars: Arnold Reyes, Menggie Cobarrubias, Dido De La Paz, Leon Miguel A research trip in the Philippines steered director Ron Morales away from one story idea and toward this thriller that looks to reveal unexpected shades and tones of the country's organized crime syndicates. Instead of good and evil, Morales is looking more at situations where "have vs. have not" is a motivation for questionable deeds. &

The Place Beyond the Pines (2012) Certificate R 140 min - Crime | Drama A motorcycle stunt rider turns to robbing banks as a way to provide for his lover and their newborn child, a decision that puts him on a collision course with an ambitious rookie cop navigating a department ruled by a corrupt detective. Director: Derek Cianfrance Stars: Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper, Eva Mendes, Craig Van Hook Hopefully Ryan Gosling's second project with writer/director Derek Cianfrance will reconfirm that Blue Valentine provided Gosling with his best role to date while Rose Byrne continues to build an admirable string of big- and small-screen successes and Bradley Cooper gets some much-needed tarnish on his near-perfect face. And, yes, we too think the premise recalls Drive a bit too much on paper. &nb

Love and Honor (2013) Certificate PG-13 100 min - Drama | Romance | War When a young soldier in Vietnam gets dumped by his hometown girl, he and his best friend decide to go AWOL and return to the States to win her back. Director: Danny Mooney Stars: Liam Hemsworth, Teresa Palmer, Aimee Teegarden, Austin Stowell No, Liam Hemsworth is not in another Nicholas Sparks movie, but from the sound of the story and the look of the poster, even we were looking for the novelist's name in these credits. &nbs

Spring Breakers (2012) Certificate R 94 min - Crime | Drama Four college girls who land in jail after robbing a restaurant in order to fund their spring break vacation find themselves bailed out by a drug and arms dealer who wants them to do some dirty work. Director: Harmony Korine Stars: Vanessa Hudgens, Selena Gomez, Ashley Benson, Rachel Korine Outsider filmmaker Harmony Korine -- who is somehow 40, FYI -- has been flirting with the mainstream ever since his crazy/beautiful casting for his latest project, a look at a group of college girls who go buck wild. Co-star Selena Gomez hit the press circuit recently to advise her core fans to steer clear here -- the kind of warning that can only inspire real-life rebellion. James Franco's amalgamation of white rappers have kept his character's actions front and center, too, including key scenes that showcase some of his innate carnal ta

The Call (2013) Certificate R 94 min - Crime | Thriller When a veteran 911 operator takes a life-altering call from a teenage girl who has just been abducted, she realizes that she must confront a killer from her past in order to save the girl's life. Director: Brad Anderson Stars: Halle Berry, Evie Thompson, Abigail Breslin, Morris Chestnut I haven't been able to consider anything else about this thriller after a friend of mine pointed out Halle Berry's wig, which might as well have its own credit in director Brad Anderson's newest puzzling career choice. Right at the beginning of 2013, Anderson's latest found itself on the radar once it was swapped into the release date previously held by the Carrie remake. &nbs

Das letzte Schweigen (2010) 118 min - Crime | Drama | Thriller 13-year-old Sinikka vanishes on a hot summer night. Her bicycle is found in the exact place where a girl was killed 23 years ago. The dramatic present forces those involved in the original case to face their past. Director: Baran bo Odar Stars: Ulrich Thomsen, Claudia Michelsen, Wotan Wilke Möhring, Katrin Saß Ulrich Thomsen landed an enviable co-starring role on Alan Ball's new series Banshee (which was renewed for a second season recently), and here he portrays a long-dormant killer who is revitalized by a copycat murder. The European reviews are strong; Stateside, we're thinking a savvy VOD campaign is in the works since the theatrical promotion was rather minimal. &

Side Effects (2013) Certificate R 106 min - Crime | Drama | Thriller A young woman's world unravels when a drug prescribed by her psychiatrist has unexpected side effects. Director: Steven Soderbergh Stars: Rooney Mara, Channing Tatum, Jude Law, Catherine Zeta-Jones Originally pitched as a "thriller set in the world of pharmacology", the final storyline sounds a bit like an urban, white collar Nicholas Sparks novel, but really it's Channing Tatum's third film with Steven Soderbergh - and quite possibly the director's last feature before exploring his TV options. Soderbergh's remarks on trying to make narratively rich box-office hits makes me feel he could have 1) bailed from studio moviemaking after Haywire 2) taught a summer session at a deserving film school; and 3) pitched AMC for an early 2013 program. There's definite addiction potential here. &
