Director: Jamie Meltzer Stars: Brandon Darby, Scott Crow, Lisa Fithian, Caroline Heldman In some ways similar to last year's The Imposter, this documentary on former radical leftist Brandon Darby is a portrait of a chameleon whose true nature and intentions cannot possibly be known. There's already a regarded Darby expose -- Better This World -- but director Jamie Meltzer's adds new layers of intrigue by simply pointing his camera directly at Darby and letting him do most of the talking. &

Directors: Joshua Oppenheimer | Anonymous | Christine Cynn Stars: Haji Anif, Syamsul Arifin, Sakhyan Asmara, Anwars Congo Joshua Oppenheimer's documentary might prove to be the toughest sit this summer, and the most written about films of the year. After its debut at Telluride, Werner Herzog and Errol Morris signed on as executive producers, bringing added awareness to a project almost ten years in the making (Oppenheimer has been working in Indonesia since early last decade). A Band Called Death (2012) 96 min - Documentary A documentary on the 1970s punk trio Death, and their new-found popularity decades after they disbanded. Directors: Mark Christopher Covino | Jeff Howlett Stars: Bobby Hackney, David Hackney, Dannis Hackney, Mick Collins Mark Christopher Covino's documentary has been hyped as a look at a forgotten band who served as a precursor to the punk-rock movement in the U.S., which is hyperbole that still cannot outshine the power of Death's music and the seriously cool way in which the Detroit trio's music has been reintroduced to contemporary disciples. Picture if your son made your 1970s garage band one of today's most sought after underground records. &

Évocateur: The Morton Downey Jr. Movie (2012) Certificate R Documentary Before entire networks were built on populist personalities; before reality morphed into a TV genre; the masses fixated on a single, sociopathic star: controversial talk-show host Morton Downey, Jr. Directors: Seth Kramer | Daniel A. Miller | Jeremy Newberger Stars: Morton Downey Jr., Gloria Allred, Michele Bachmann, Glenn Beck Morton Downey, Jr. first ruled the airwaves in the mid-1980s before creating one of the decade's most memorable TV shows - a blueprint for countless imitators that still glut the syndication circuit to this day. I'm unsure if Seth Kramer's documentary looks to humanize its subject, a man who manipulated the media and his audience alike until his final days, but I do hope it traces back to his roots as a songwriter; Downey Jr. had more moments than his controversial 80s heyday.
