Girl Most Likely (2012) Certificate PG-13 103 min - Comedy A failed New York playwright awkwardly navigates the transition from Next Big Thing to Last Year's News. Directors: Shari Springer Berman | Robert Pulcini Stars: Kristen Wiig, Annette Bening, Matt Dillon, Darren Criss A lot has been said about Kristen Wiig's cautious (?) and/or strategic (?) post-Bridesmaids choices, and her partnership here with American Splendor co-directors Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini definitely has indie-film tongues flapping about. The story seems a bit like Young Adult without the obsessive-love component -- a mid-life crisis in a vacuum, perhaps. Kristen Wiig can turn a single word into a laugh, so her mother-daughter banter with Annette Bening ought to be hysterical. &nb

Song for Marion (2012) Certificate PG-13 93 min - Comedy | Drama | Music | Romance Grumpy pensioner Arthur honors his recently deceased wife's passion for performing by joining the unconventional local choir to which she used to belong, a process that helps him build bridges with his estranged son, James. Director: Paul Andrew Williams Stars: Terence Stamp, Gemma Arterton, Christopher Eccleston, Vanessa Redgrave Brit filmmaker Paul Andrew Williams takes a departure from the darker-hued movies he has directed in the past to offer up this crowd-pleaser that knits together two popular themes: the surly older protagonist whose heart begins to thaw out, and senior-citizen choruses belting out unlikely hits. But, I mean, it's Terence Stamp, and you don't waste an opportunity to see him perform.

Hernandez It might just take music-loving aliens to make the Williamsburgh, Brooklyn film scene finally feel like it is tethered to the larger world. Frances Ha (2012) Certificate R 86 min - Comedy | Drama A story that follows a New York woman (who doesn't really have an apartment), apprentices for a dance company (though she's not really a dancer), and throws herself headlong into her dreams, even as their possible reality dwindles. Director: Noah Baumbach Stars: Greta Gerwig, Mickey Sumner, Adam Driver, Michael Zegen Looks like Greta Gerwig gets to star in a Greenberg of her own making, as she and director Noah Baumbach co-wrote this screenplay together in secret, and have created a work that has been as well received as Baumbach's first two films, Kicking and Screaming and The Squid and the Whale. We still don't know if Gerwig will ever have a genuine breakthrough; that said, she's earning most of the praise here.

First Night (2010) 116 min - Comedy | Musical | Romance Adam is a rich industrialist, who aspires to a more cultured world. Spurred on by playful jibes that he is little more than a city suit living the capitalist's dream, this frustrated amateur opera singer decides to throw an opera in his lavish country retreat. Once his friends see him belting out the notes, he feels sure it will spell the end to their shallow taunts. In fact, it might even help him win the hand of a female conductor he has been pursuing whom - it just so happens - is the first to be recruited for his showpiece. Director: Christopher Menaul Stars: Richard E. Grant, Sarah Brightman, Mía Maestro, Julian Ovenden Director Christopher Menaul has been in the news of late as his upcoming film, Summer in February, features Emily Browning, Dominic Cooper, and Dan Stevens of "Downton Abbey" caugh

Den skaldede frisør (2012) Certificate R 116 min - Comedy | Romance A hairdresser who has lost her hair to cancer finds out her husband is having an affair, travels to Italy for her daughter's wedding and meets a widower who still blames the world for the loss of his wife. Director: Susanne Bier Stars: Pierce Brosnan, Trine Dyrholm, Molly Blixt Egelind, Sebastian Jessen It's rare to see Susanne Bier angle for laughs, so interest in her latest project has been high from its announcement. Though we hear the dynamics between Pierce Brosnan and Trine Dyrholm's characters offers up some heady themes against an almost fairy tale aesthetic created by Bier and her cinematographer. This one could linger in theaters for most of the summer.

Arthur Newman (2012) Certificate R 101 min - Comedy | Drama A story of a man who fakes his own death and assumes a new identity in order to escape his life, who then moves in with a woman who is also trying to leave her past behind. Director: Dante Ariola Stars: Colin Firth, Emily Blunt, Anne Heche, Sterling Beaumon Love the idea of Colin Firth and Emily Blunt together in a comedy with some dramatic, identity-shedding elements? Us too. Also compelling is the fact that the company releasing Arthur has partnered with BitTorrent -- a website formerly synonymous with piracy that is now going legit -- to promote the movie.

Dans la maison (2012) Certificate R 105 min - Comedy | Drama | Mystery | Thriller A high school French teacher gets increasingly drawn into a precocious student's increasingly transgressive story about his relationship with a friend's family. Director: François Ozon Stars: Fabrice Luchini, Vincent Schmitt, Ernst Umhauer, Kristin Scott Thomas A voyeuristic thriller that features plenty of sex and a peep behind the curtains and under the covers of a seemingly perfect family - seen from the perspective of a young writer who wields a pen and paper instead of a laptop? With Kristin Scott Thomas also observing from the margins? By all appearance, this seems to be one of writer/director François Ozon's art-house breakthroughs. &nbs
