The Angels' Share (2012) 101 min - Comedy | Crime | Drama Narrowly avoiding jail, new dad Robbie vows to turn over a new leaf. A visit to a whisky distillery inspires him and his mates to seek a way out of their hopeless lives. Director: Ken Loach Stars: Paul Brannigan, John Henshaw, Roger Allam, Gary Maitland We know that Ken Loach is concerned with art and not commerce -- he and his producer Rebecca O'Brien know how to raise a budget -- but if you're at all intrigued by what a Loach commercial breakthrough might look like, this warmer-hearted comedy could be it, especially if word-of-mouth catches on with older audiences. There's a great story to hear about the real-life reform of lead actor Paul Brannigan. &nb

Scary MoVie (2013) Certificate PG-13 86 min - Comedy A couple begin to experience some unusual activity after bringing their lost nieces and nephew home. With the help of home-surveillance cameras, they learn they're being stalked by a nefarious demon. Director: Malcolm D. Lee Stars: Simon Rex, Ashley Tisdale, Charlie Sheen, Lindsay Lohan Six years is a long time between sequels, and this new installment of the franchise seems pretty stale since Scary veteran Marlon Wayans jumped ship to co-write and star in A Haunted House, which spoofed Paranormal Activity and performed remarkably well at the January box office (in fact, a sequel was just announced this week). So what's left here? Charlie Sheen and Lindsay Lohan in bed together. Mike Tyson in fetish gear. Snoop Lion smoking joints.

Eddie (2012) 90 min - Comedy | Horror A painter struggling for inspiration finds an unexpected muse after he accepts a teaching position in a small town and becomes the caregiver to Eddie, a seemingly docile art student with a rare sleepwalking condition. Director: Boris Rodriguez Stars: Thure Lindhardt, Georgina Reilly, Dylan Smith, Paul Braunstein Boris Rodriguez's horror-comedy might not be on the general movie-goer's radar, but the oddball premise, presence of leading man Thure Lindhardt, and reunion of Pontypool stars Georgina Reilly and Stephen McHattie might push this into can't-miss territory for more than just genre fans.

The Brass Teapot (2012) Certificate R 101 min - Comedy | Fantasy | Thriller When a couple discovers that a brass teapot makes them money whenever they hurt themselves, they must come to terms with how far they are willing to go. Director: Ramaa Mosley Stars: Juno Temple, Michael Angarano, Alexis Bledel, Billy Magnussen Partially credit (or blame) "Girls" for the abundance of stories about young people facing an all-too-bleak professional/economic climate, though we say angst and questionable morals/behavior are more fun to watch than twentysomething ennui. Hopefully Ramma Mosley's morality tale has a narrative worthy of its formidable cast. &

Mental (2012) 116 min - Comedy | Drama A charismatic, crazy hothead transforms a family's life when she becomes the nanny of five girls whose mother has cracked from her husband's political ambitions and his infidelity. Director: P.J. Hogan Stars: Toni Collette, Anthony LaPaglia, Liev Schreiber, Rebecca Gibney Nice to see Toni Collette back with her Muriel's Wedding director P.J. Hogan, but from the sound of things, we won't be quoting this crazy-nanny comedy some twenty years after its release. Ah, the 1990s ...

Wrong (2012) 94 min - Comedy | Mystery Dolph Springer wakes up one morning to realize he has lost the love of his life, his dog, Paul. During his quest to get Paul (and his life) back, Dolph radically changes the lives of others -- risking his sanity all the while. Director: Quentin Dupieux Stars: Jack Plotnick, Todd Giebenhain, Eric Judor, Alexis Dziena Quentin Dupieux might be a film-festival programmer's dream with his surrealistic narrative approach, oddball visuals, and composer alter ego (Mr. Oizo). I'm sure it was a blast to see Rubber, his last outing, in a theater full of pepped-up journalists and general film enthusiasts, but personally the hype didn't translate the two separate times I watched it. That said, the presence of William Fichtner playing a "professional pet lover", combined with a relatable premise (a missing dog instead of a killer tire), might be the sort of

The Happy Poet (2010) 85 min - Comedy | Drama | Romance A poet who starts a health-conscious food stand finds support from his friends, as well as a potential love match with one of his customers. But will unexpected complications jeopardize his dreams of a hot dog-free future? Director: Paul Gordon Stars: Paul Gordon, Jonny Mars, Chris Doubek, Liz Fisher The most patient critics have likened Paul Gordon's Austin-set eco-comedy to Slacker for its subculture focus and gone to certain lengths to differentiate the work from the mumblecore genre, which is enough for me to consider watching it.

InAPPropriate Comedy (2013) Certificate R Comedy In this comedy film, a computer tablet full of the world's most hilariously offensive apps breaks through the borders of political correctness, stirring up cultural anarchy. Director: Vince Offer Stars: Adrien Brody, Lindsay Lohan, Michelle Rodriguez, Rob Schneider By now, most pundits have stopped riffing on the potential reasons for Adrien Brody signing on to star in the directorial debut of the ShamWow Guy; all the Lindsay Lohan comments and jokes have aged. So, to paraphrase a friend: This is the kind of seemingly harmless release that inflicts the most damage on movie critics, who cannot opt to unsee it. &n

Gimme the Loot (2012) 79 min - Comedy | Crime | Drama When their latest work is buffed by a rival crew, two determined graffiti writers embark on an elaborate plan to bomb the ultimate location: the New York Mets' Home Run Apple. Director: Adam Leon Stars: Ty Hickson, Tashiana Washington, Joshua Rivera, Zoë Lescaze Adam Leon's debut has become a favorite of the SXSW scene, a testament to the effectiveness of scrappy filmmaking, and a New York reminder that the cool stuff isn't happening in Manhattan anymore.

Starbuck (2011) Certificate R 109 min - Comedy As his lover announces her pregnancy, a fortysomething slacker receives other life-changing news: 142 people, all of them the result of artificial insemination, have filed a class action lawsuit against him, their biological father. Director: Ken Scott Stars: Patrick Huard, Julie LeBreton, Antoine Bertrand, Dominic Philie Hollywood has struck out over the last few years, having released several variations on the artificial-insemination comedy, so we were surprised to see that Canadian filmmaker Ken Scott has successfully mounted an A-list remake that will shoot later this year. &
