Kill Your Darlings (2013) Certificate R 104 min - Biography | Drama | Romance | Thriller A murder in 1944 draws together the great poets of the beat generation: Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac and William Burroughs. Director: John Krokidas Stars: Daniel Radcliffe, Dane DeHaan, Michael C. Hall, Ben Foster When a cast such as this is paired with a first-time director, we can rely on the performances if the script and filmmaking aren't always the strongest. The seems to be the prevailing feeling here, at least with festival-goers, but we're unsure if their feedback will register since everyone is talking about the sex scene between Danielle Radcliffe and Dane DeHaan. We're surprised that Sony Pictures Classics didn't cut a new trailer teasing it right before opening weekend. &

All Is Lost (2013) Certificate PG-13 106 min - Action | Adventure | Drama After a collision with a shipping container at sea, a resourceful sailor finds himself, despite all efforts to the contrary, staring his mortality in the face. Director: J.C. Chandor Stars: Robert Redford From the sound of the reviews coming out of Cannes, what might be lost is J.C. Chandor's momentum after Margin Call proved to be a theatrical success and VOD phenomenon. Seems Chandor and Robert Redford were going for a meditative thriller but might have wound up with something a little more on the aggravating/disappointing side. Still, we don't rule out a re-edit and more welcoming acceptance when the film hits theaters. &nbs

Escape Plan (2013) Certificate R 115 min - Action | Mystery | Thriller When a structural-security authority finds himself set up and incarcerated in the world's most secret and secure prison, he has to use his skills to escape with help from the inside. Director: Mikael Håfström Stars: Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, 50 Cent, Vincent D'Onofrio Whether this is one of your most-anticipated action movies of the year, or if you think the premise sounds like a metaphor for either Stallone or Schwarzenegger's chosen profession, the real downward spiral being felt here has to be by director Mikael Häfström.

The Fifth Estate (2013) Certificate R 128 min - Biography | Drama | Thriller A dramatic thriller based on real events that reveals the quest to expose the deceptions and corruptions of power that turned an Internet upstart into the 21st century's most fiercely debated organization. Director: Bill Condon Stars: Benedict Cumberbatch, Daniel Brühl, Carice van Houten, Alicia Vikander The first Internet-maverick profile since The Social Network worked hard to create a a Zero Dark Thirty-level controversy/conversation with its marketing campaign. Julian Assange himself denounced an early version of the script, saying its structure was built on a series of lies - though it's hard to know which screenplay he saw, as DreamWorks used two different books as the basis of the filmed story. Don't expect his voice to be silent at any stage unless he wants it to be. In lig

Carrie (2013) Certificate R 100 min - Drama | Horror A reimagining of the classic horror tale about Carrie White, a shy girl outcast by her peers and sheltered by her deeply religious mother, who unleashes telekinetic terror on her small town after being pushed too far at her senior prom. Director: Kimberly Peirce Stars: Chloë Grace Moretz, Julianne Moore, Gabriella Wilde, Portia Doubleday It's unsurprising to see Brian De Palma's creation applied to modern times, the age of heightened awareness of peer-to-peer bullying. I'll spare you any commentary on the remake trend and say: at least the casting choices are ace. Though it will be completely different in tone, I will use Chlöe Moretz's performance as Carolyn Stoddard in Dark Shadows as the litmus test for her stepping into a character immortalized by Sissy Spacek.

Cassadaga (2011) Certificate R 108 min - Horror | Thriller A deaf woman who resurrects the ghost of a murdered young woman is forced by the spirit to a serial killer who turns his female victims into marionette dolls. Director: Anthony DiBlasi Stars: Kelen Coleman, Avis-Marie Barnes, Kevin Alejandro, Louise Fletcher We're not sure why it's taken so long for Anthony DiBlasi's 2011 indie horror movie to be released, especially since he gained a form of notoriety and cult success with his involvement in the world of Clive Barker's Book of Blood and The Midnight Meat Train. Ah, right, it must be the fact that star Kelen Coleman's profile has been raised thanks to "The Mindy Project" and "The Newsroom". Also, there's an Oscar winner amongst the cast ... &nbs

Director: Logan Miller Stars: Ed Harris, January Jones, Jason Isaacs, Eduardo Noriega If you've ever thought that January Jones might be the Lana Del Ray of the acting world, this pulpy Western that had an inauspicious debut at Sundance might confirm your believes. On the other side of the acting spectrum, Ed Harris has some connection to brothers Logan and Noah Miller; he starred in the filmmaking duo's debut, Touching Home. &n

CBGB (2013) Certificate R 101 min - Drama | Music A look at the New York City punk-rock scene and the venerable nightclub, CBGB. Director: Randall Miller Stars: Alan Rickman, Malin Akerman, Justin Bartha, Richard de Klerk Earlier this year, New York City's Metropolitan Museum earned some eye rolls and jeers for its exhibit, PUNK: Chaos to Couture, and a notorious gala celebration, where Anne Hathaway tried out bleachy blonde hair and then-pregnant Kim Kardashian's floral print Riccardo Tisci dress found her edited out of the pages of Vogue. Next up: Bottle Shock director Randall Miller's latest film casts some of the tamest performers around to recreate an era when Lower Manhattan didn't look like a giant outdoor shopping mall. &

All the Boys Love Mandy Lane (2013) Certificate R 90 min - Horror | Mystery | Thriller A group of high-schoolers invite Mandy Lane, a good girl who became quite hot over the summer, to a weekend party on a secluded ranch. While the festivities rage on, the number of revelers begins to drop quite mysteriously. Director: Jonathan Levine Stars: Amber Heard, Anson Mount, Whitney Able, Michael Welch More mind-boggling than this slasher-movie tribute's 7-year delay from a proper release? The notion that its star isn't yet a household name. We're beginning to think that's how Amber Heard wants it to be. Also worth noting is how divided hardcore critics are toward Warm Bodies director Jonathan Levine's debut, which toyed with its sub-genre long before The Cabin in the Woods. &nbs
