At Any Price (2012) Certificate R 105 min - Drama | Thriller A farming family's business is threatened by an unexpected crisis, further testing the relationship between a father and his rebellious son. Director: Ramin Bahrani Stars: Dennis Quaid, Zac Efron, Kim Dickens, Heather Graham Part of me get this project in theory: a message movie designed to further advance the second stage of Zac Efron's acting career. The other part of me thinks this looks like Footloose without the fun and the best-selling soundtrack.

Mud (2012) Certificate PG-13 130 min - Drama Two young boys encounter a fugitive and form a pact to help him evade the bounty hunters on his trail and to reunite him with his true love. Director: Jeff Nichols Stars: Matthew McConaughey, Tye Sheridan, Jacob Lofland, Sam Shepard Since Matthew McConaughey suddenly is every critic's favor actor, look for his starring role to help make the new film from Jeff Nichols (whose last work, Take Shelter, really caught me on a second viewing) his highest-profile outing yet. We're thoroughly anticipating the boy-adventure and its similarities to David Gordon Green's early work. Hopefully Reese Witherspoon - would certainly had a newsworthy weekend, recently - will emerge with some much-needed cool factor, too. &n

Filly Brown (2012) Certificate R 80 min - Drama | Music A promising hip-hop rhymer from Los Angeles finds herself in a gray area when a record producer offers her a compromising shot at stardom. Directors: Youssef Delara | Michael D. Olmos Stars: Gina Rodriguez, Jenni Rivera, Lou Diamond Phillips, Edward James Olmos Something tells me a relatively big opening weekend awaits this life-affirming, rhyme-soaked drama for which star Gina Rodriguez has earned strong reviews. It's the kind of story that Pantelion Films -- the distributor that proclaims itself to be the first major Latino studio in Hollywood and has an output deal with Lionsgate -- will know just how to market effectively. &

Disconnect (2012) Certificate R 115 min - Drama | Thriller A drama centered on a group of people searching for human connections in today's wired world. Director: Henry Alex Rubin Stars: Jason Bateman, Jonah Bobo, Haley Ramm, Hope Davis Murderball director Henry Alex Rubin makes his feature-film debut with this cautionary tale - a Crash for the digital age if you will (and if you want). Fashion-lovers should keep their eyes open for a sleazy appearance by designer Marc Jacobs, who apparently tries to lure young beauties into his online porn empire.

To the Wonder (2012) Certificate R 112 min - Drama | Romance After falling in love in Paris, Marina and Neil come to Oklahoma, where problems arise. Their church's Spanish-born pastor struggles with his faith, while Neil encounters a woman from his childhood. Director: Terrence Malick Stars: Ben Affleck, Olga Kurylenko, Javier Bardem, Rachel McAdams Terrence Malick is one of the least time-bound directors in history, so the short wait for his follow-up to The Tree of Life is worth noting, as is the divisive reception the film received at its Venice premiere last year. But this should come as no surprise given Malick's unconventional approach to, well, everything. The cattiest thing we've ever heard Ben Affleck 2.0 say came at the expense of Malick's on-set direction, which seemed more focused on capturing natural elements than human interactions. The subject matter definitely

Upstream Color (2013) 96 min - Drama | Sci-Fi A man and woman are drawn together, entangled in the life cycle of an ageless organism. Identity becomes an illusion as they struggle to assemble the loose fragments of wrecked lives. Director: Shane Carruth Stars: Amy Seimetz, Frank Mosley, Shane Carruth, Andrew Sensenig Shane Carruth self distributes his second film, a follow-up to the treasured sci-fi mind-boggler, Primer. Carruth's candid talk about the current state of independent filmmaking and distribution is very worthwhile reading.

Simon Killer (2012) 101 min - Drama A recent college graduate flees to Paris after a break-up, where his involvement with a prostitute begins to reveal a potentially dark recent past. Director: Antonio Campos Stars: Brady Corbet, Mati Diop, Lila Salet, Michaël Abiteboul Antonio Campos's follow-up to Afterschool was inspired in part by the work of writer Georges Simenon, and the director developed the script with his two leads, Brady Corbet and Mati Diop. We understand the overall story is more of a character/mood piece than a thriller undulating with the potential for violence. Definitely intrigued here. &n

The Company You Keep (2012) Certificate R 121 min - Drama | Thriller A former Weather Underground activist goes on the run from a journalist who has discovered his identity. Director: Robert Redford Stars: Robert Redford, Brit Marling, Stanley Tucci, Nick Nolte The trailer for Robert Redford's latest feels like a montage of Best Picture Oscar moments, and it showcases a stacked roster of some seriously most-wanted performers. Of Shia LaBeouf's recent work, this is the performance that has received the least press -- only because he wasn't intimidating his female co-star (Lawless), dropping acid (The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman), or having sex on camera (Nymphomaniac).
