Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor (2013) Certificate PG-13 111 min - Drama An ambitious married woman's temptation by a handsome billionaire leads to betrayal, recklessness, and forever alters the course of her life. Director: Tyler Perry Stars: Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Vanessa Williams, Brandy Norwood, Kim Kardashian We admire Tyler Perry for creating his own empire, brushing off the Alex Cross failure (easier than most other A-listers), and resetting his focus on alternating Madea/non-Madea films on his own schedule. This particular project first caught attention as Kim Kardashian was cast in a supporting role, while others remarked at how much star Jurnee Smollett had grown up since Eve's Bayou. Thematically, Perry isn't breaking any new ground, and we expect him to regain his footing here. &n

Hunky Dory (2011) 110 min - Drama | Music In the heat of the summer of 1976, drama teacher Vivienne fights sweltering heat and general teenage apathy to put on an end-of-term version of Shakespeare's The Tempest. Director: Marc Evans Stars: Minnie Driver, Kristian Gwilliam, Adam Byard, Aled Pugh Since it is no longer hard to sell audiences on contemporary musicals, we're a bit surprised by Hunky Dory's relatively low profile prior to its release. Word of mouth for Minnie Driver's performance and the presence of emerging star Aneurin Barnard -- who looks like a perfect cast addition to the next season of "Game of Thrones" -- could mean a long shelf life with fans of all things feel-good. &n

The acting, direction, storytelling, and cinematography play equal parts in what could be a breakthrough release.

Upside Down (2012) Certificate PG-13 100 min - Drama | Fantasy | Romance | Sci-Fi Adam and Eden fell in love as teens despite the fact that they live on twinned worlds with gravities that pull in opposite directions. Ten years after a forced separation, Adam sets out on a dangerous quest to reconnect with his love. Director: Juan Solanas Stars: Jim Sturgess, Kirsten Dunst, Timothy Spall, Blu Mankuma The thing I love about the sci-fi genre: ambitious films can earn ardent fans and just as many passionate detractors. I sense Juan Solanas's ambitious feature might generate such a divide with its twinned worlds, class themes, and epic romantic gestures. Considering the fates that befell Across the Universe and Cloud Atlas, maybe the third time's the charm for Jim Sturgess? Conversely, the genre seems to suit Kirsten Dunst just fine, what with Melancholia being two of the brightest

Director: Sally Potter Stars: Elle Fanning, Alice Englert, Annette Bening, Oliver Platt Challenging writer/director Sally Potter (The Tango Lesson/Orlando) is back on the radar with a coming-of-age story set in 1960s London and co-starring our favorite Fanning and Alice Englert, the daughter of Jane Campion who just starred in the barely seen Cronicile Casterilor: A 16-a luna.

Emperor (2012) Certificate PG-13 105 min - Drama | History | War As the Japanese surrender at the end of WWII, Gen. Fellers is tasked with deciding if Emperor Hirohito will be hanged as a war criminal. Influencing his ruling is his quest to find Aya, an exchange student he met years earlier in the U.S. Director: Peter Webber Stars: Matthew Fox, Colin Moy, Tommy Lee Jones, Eriko Hatsune Considering director Peter Webber's track record (Hannibal Rising, Girl with a Pearl Earring) and the narrative framing that puts Matthew Fox's character in focus instead of Tommy Lee Jones's, we're thinking you can expect impressive production design and TLJ not being impressed by General Fox's leading man prowess. &nbs

Beyond the hills (2012) 150 min - Drama The friendship between two young women who grew up in the same orphanage; one has found refuge at a convent in Romania and refuses to leave with her friend, who now lives in Germany. Director: Cristian Mungiu Stars: Cosmina Stratan, Cristina Flutur, Valeriu Andriuta, Dana Tapalaga Cristian Mungiu stunned the indie-film world with 4 luni, 3 saptamâni si 2 zile, and his new work -- a two-time Cannes winner -- looks at a different kind of tragic relationship caught in another inflexible societal construct. We take a certain joy in grueling, naturalistic narratives that tend to hypnotize the viewer as they enter their second hour.

I, Me aur Main (2013) Drama As Ishaan, a music producer who has commitment issues with the women in his life, feels a connection with Gauri, his next-door neighbor, he begins to learn the importance of relationships. Director: Kapil Sharma Stars: John Abraham, Chitrangda Singh, Prachi Desai, Zarina Wahab Kapil Sharma has enjoyed a pretty cool career to date in his native India -- a clutch of reality TV wins for his stand-up comedy; first assistant director credits for The Fall and The Darjeeling Limited -- and here he makes his directorial debut with a story that should play well to his comedy instincts. Lead actor John Abraham isn't a crossover star yet, but this might be the movie to change things.

And when he sparks with a single mother, he learns how his choices have real-life consequences. Director: Mark Webber Stars: Mark Webber, Alia Shawkat, Shannyn Sossamon, Issac Love Indie-movie vet Mark Webber made a mainstream breakthrough of a sort with a supporting role in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, and he's followed up that success with other higher profile acting roles, being a major presence in Joshua Leonard's The Lie, and this - his directorial debut that unfurled at Sundance in 2012. &

Stoker (2013) Certificate R 99 min - Drama | Mystery | Thriller After India's father dies, her Uncle Charlie, who she never knew existed, comes to live with her and her unstable mother. She comes to suspect this mysterious, charming man has ulterior motives and becomes increasingly infatuated with him. Director: Chan-wook Park Stars: Mia Wasikowska, Nicole Kidman, Matthew Goode, Dermot Mulroney I can't really describe my anticipation for the English-language debut from Chan-wook Park, director of Bakjwi and the Lady Vengeance trilogy most popularly represented by its second installment, Oldboy. Though he isn't directing from his own screenplay -- those duties were left to Wentworth Miller, who was guided by the dark-hued hand of Erin Cressida Wilson -- Park has narrative and stylistic flourishes that are a custom fit for Nicole Kidman's art-house leanings. Meanwhile, Mia Wasikowska c
