2013 Gotham Nominations, Led by '12 Years a Slave,' 'Inside Llewyn Davis' and 'Upstream Color,' Boosts Spirit and Oscar Hopefuls Steve McQueen's slavery drama "12 Years a Slave" is leading this year's Gotham Awards with three nominations, for Best Feature, Actor (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and Breakthrough Actor (Lupita Nyong'o). This will boost its profile heading into the year-end awards corridor. Meanwhile, the Coen brothers' "Inside Llewyn Davis" and Shane Carruth's "Upstream Color" each received two nominations, including Best Feature. This could help the Oscar perennials' "Inside Llewyn Davis," which is currently in the middle of the Oscar pack, while "Upstream Color" is more likely to be heading for Indie Spirit contention. The other two titles in that category are Richard Linklater's "Before Midnight" and David Lowery's "Ain't Them Bodies Saints," two dark-horse indies who need more spotlights like t

Ebiri: The Counselor Is Star-Studded, But It’s Really Cormac McCarthy Who Plays Every Role
Can a movie be both a catastrophe and strangely compelling — maybe even, gasp, good — at the same time? It seems The Counselor is determined to find out. On the surface, this new Ridley Scott thriller, written by No Country for Old Men novelist Cormac McCarthy, is a narrative wipeout: a supposedly twisty-turny crime drama set along the border that isn’t all that twisty or turny but is deeply convoluted, and at times howlingly insane. But it knows it makes no sense. In fact, it rubs our faces in it. The movie opens with the Counselor (Michael Fassbender), whose name we never learn, and his lady love Laura (Penélope Cruz) in bed, making love. "Tell me something sexy,” he says. "I want you to put your hands

His 87-year-old mother, Queen Elizabeth II, has no intention of abdicating, but her eldest child is assuming more responsibility as time goes on. Massachusetts Teen Saw Woody Allen Movie After Allegedly Killing Math Teacher The 14-year-old accused of murdering Colleen Ritzer reportedly saw "Blue Jasmine" at a local movie theater sometime afterward. The Massachusetts teen who allegedly murdered his math teacher went to the movies sometime afterward. Authorities say that Philip D. Chism, a 14-year-old high school freshman, killed Colleen Ritzer and dumped her body in the woods. Sometime after the murder, he went to the movies, buying a ticket to the 4:30 p.m. Tuesday screening of Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine at the Hollywood Hits theater in Danvers, Mass., The Boston Herald reported. Police said he left the theater about a hour and a half later. Theater manager Scott Przybycien told the Herald that he "blended right in." "He was here and gone before we even knew he was here," Przybycien added. Ritzer's body was fo

Kelly Clarkson's Mom Reacts to Wedding News: "I'm Glad She Finally Got Her Prince Charming!" "Miss Indepedent," indeed. Kelly Clarkson's Oct. 20 wedding was so private that even the singer's own mother didn't score an invite! When the original American Idol winner married talent manager Brandon Blackstock at Blackberry Farm in Walland, Tenn., only the groom's two daughters from a previous marriage were present. There are no hard feelings on Jeanne Ann Rose's part, however, as the proud mom posted a collage of pictures from her daughter's big day via Instagram on Wednesday, Oct. 23. "My girl is all grown up and now a married lady! Such a stunning bride!" Rose wrote in the caption. "She deserves every happiness and I'm glad she finally got her Prince Charming! Mrs. Blackstock!" Clarkson, 31, looked picture perfect wearing a Temperley Bridal gown (which retails for $7,015) and a Maria Elena Headpi

5 Wtf Moments From Last Night’s American Horror Story: Coven Episode Each week, American Horror Story manages to add a new layer of craziness atop its already perverted foundation. But since this is a show that gave Anne Frank a frontal lobotomy last season, the antes need to be upped with regularity. If you’re watching this at home and not yelling, "WHAT THE FUUUUCK!” at your television, I don’t know what to tell you. This week’s episode was particularly insane, too. Let us reflect on its five most WTF moments. [Obvious warning: major spoilers ahead.] 5. TROPHY KILL What happened? We learned that Kyle's mother had been molesting him before the tragic bus accident, so when he was brought back from the dead as Zombie Kyle, he murdered her with a trophy. OMG WHAT?!? Yeah, and his mother was Mare Winningham with a labret piercing. Was it scary? Totally! Labret piercings are awful

Director: Wayne Blair Stars: Chris O'Dowd, Deborah Mailman, Jessica Mauboy, Shari Sebbens The presence of Chris O'Dowd -- so funny in general and so spot-on as the voice of the tech generation on "Girls" -- should help lure a wider audience into seeing director Wayne Blair's debut, which has reminded festival audiences that Australia makes crowd-pleasers as well as harrowing crime dramas. (Mental, which reunites Toni Collete with her Muriel's Wedding director P.J. Hogan, is another love note to the art house from Down Under. &nbs

K-11 (2012) 88 min - Drama A record producer comes around after binging on drink and drugs. He finds himself in a section of the Los Angeles County Jail reserved for homosexuals, which is ruled by a transsexual named Mousey. Director: Jules Stewart Stars: Goran Visnjic, Kate del Castillo, D.B. Sweeney, Portia Doubleday Jules Stewart -- yes, Kristen's mom -- makes her directorial debut after spending the first several decades of her career as a script supervisor (her TV credits are more impressive than her big-screen resume). Pre-Twilight Kristen was attached to the project, and we imagine her current handlers are happy their star isn't on the press beat talking about the story's "maze of drug addled-transvestite-criminal politics" -- but it sounds like a perfect transitional role given her post-Bella/post-Pattinson status. &n
