If you're expecting Boogie Nights or Star 80, you might need to adjust your expectations -- aside from the Eric Roberts cameo. Director duo Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman bring it when they're in documentary mode (The Celluloid Closet and, hello, The Times of Harvey Milk), but they are less assured narrative filmmakers (see: Howl). A weak script and period-setting trappings undermine the top-notch cast.
