The Great Gatsby (2013)

Certificate PG-13 143 min   -   Drama | Romance

A Midwestern war veteran finds himself drawn to the past and lifestyle of his millionaire neighbor.
Baz Luhrmann
Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgerton, Tobey Maguire

My love for certain novels doesn't desire to see them confined to the page or protected from being interpreted on film; take for example Cary Fukunaga's Jane Eyre, a perfect adaptation of Charlotte Brontë's dreary, soot-eyed romance, and an example of underdog cast and director choices at their most winning. When it comes to Leonardo DiCaprio reteaming with Baz Luhrmann to interpret F. Scott Fitzgerald's second-best novel, I often think that the people who have the power to green light (Gatsby reference) major projects aren't necessarily the best fit to star in them. Or act as their director. A ... Read more »

On May 5th, 1862, a few thousand Mexican soldiers put their lives on the line against the world's largest and most powerful army in one legendary battle for freedom and for Mexico.
Rafa Lara
Christian Vasquez, Angélica Aragón, Liz Gallardo, Kuno Becker

Rafa Lara's chronicle of Mexico's Battle of Puebla could find a home in the box office top 12 this weekend if Pantelion Films' typically sharp marketing is on point.

First Night (2010)

116 min   -   Comedy | Musical | Romance

Adam is a rich industrialist, who aspires to a more cultured world. Spurred on by playful jibes that he is little more than a city suit living the capitalist's dream, this frustrated amateur opera singer decides to throw an opera in his lavish country retreat. Once his friends see him belting out the notes, he feels sure it will spell the end to their shallow taunts. In fact, it might even help him win the hand of a female conductor he has been pursuing whom - it just so happens - is the first to be recruited for his showpiece.
Christopher Menaul
Richard E. Grant, Sarah Brightman, Mía Maestro, Julian Ovenden

Director Christopher Menaul has been in the news of late as his upcoming film, Summer in February, features Emily Browning, Dominic Cooper, and Dan Stevens of "Downton Abbey" caugh ... Read more »

Generation Um... (2012)

Certificate R 97 min   -   Drama

Three adults during a single day in New York City, one filled with sex, drugs, and indecision.
Mark Mann
Keanu Reeves, Bojana Novakovic, Adelaide Clemens, Daniel Sunjata

I've read some rough reviews of this New York City-set indie (this one wins) that focuses on the ennui of a Keanu Reeves character, which could mean there's a high profile new offering for people who enjoy hate-watching film.

Greetings from Tim Buckley (2012)

99 min   -   Drama

A chronicle of the days leading up to Jeff Buckley's performance at his father's tribute concert in 1991.
Daniel Algrant
Penn Badgley, Imogen Poots, Norbert Leo Butz, Ben Rosenfield

With "Gossip Girl" in his past, Penn Badgley, like Derek Zoolander before him, is pretty sure there's a lot more to life than being really, really, ridiculously good looking. And he plan on finding out what that is. We hear his closing performance as Jeff Buckley proves there's a career here if he can continue to find the right film projects.

The vampire Djuna resists the advances of Paolo, but soon gives in to their passion. When her trouble-making sister unexpectedly comes to visit, Djuna's love is threatened, and the whole vampire community becomes endangered.
Xan Cassavetes
Joséphine de La Baume, Milo Ventimiglia, Roxane Mesquida, Anna Mouglalis

Director Xan Cassavetes makes her feature debut (it's been nearly a decade since her excellent, highly highly recommended documentary Z Channel: A Magnificent Obsession) with a throwback-looking genre film starring the hypnotic Josephine de La Baume, who will also be seen in Rush later this year.

3 on 3: Will 'Days of Future Past' reboot the 'X-Men'?

About 6,000 people got a sneak peek at Comic-Con in July, but today the masses finally got their first look at Bryan Singer's "X-Men: Days of Future Past."  Judging by the reaction online it was well worth the wait.

The film finds both the original movie and "First Class" era "X-Men" meeting in order to stop history taking a very dark turn. That means lots of big names (Michael Fassbender, Hugh Jackman), Oscar winners (Halle Berry, Jennifer Lawrence, Anna Paquin) a Gandolf (Ian McKellen) and a Picard (Patrick Stewart) sharing the big screen.  You can find out more about the trailer by watching it here or checking out HitFix's Gregory Ellwood and Drew McWeeny's news update embedded at the top of this post.

After watching the report, check out more of our movie team's thoughts about "Days of Future Past" including whether Lawrence, ... Read more »

Newlywed Kristen Bell Dishes on Life as a Wife—and Whether She's Planning a Big Bash to Celebrate

Kristen Bell is one content little cookie.

Chatting with E! News at the New York City press junket for the new animated Disney film Frozen, the newlywed pondered the question of whether her life had changed much since she and longtime love Dax Shepard made things official.

"It's slightly more exciting, like it feels like we just had a holiday or something, but not much has changed," she admitted. "But we've been waiting for a long time, and for very specific reasons, and it was small and private and everything that we wanted."

The actors, who are parents to 7-month-old daughter Lincoln, initially opted to put their nuptials on hold until same-sex couples had the same right to marry.

The Wolverine Writer Takes a Pass at 50 Shades Script

Because no one knows scintillating erotica quite like the guy who wrote the Total Recall remake. Following in the footsteps of Closer scribe Patrick Marber, The Wolverine writer Mark Bomback is next in line to take a pass at the Fifty Shades of Grey script. The announcement will likely come as a surprise to anyone who has seen The Wolverine and remembers the chemistry vacuum created during Hugh Jackman and Tao Okamato's wooden love-making scene. If Bomback was called in to ramp up the non-erotic scenes, however, we are all in.

Kim Kardashian and Family Take Over Magic Mountain for Kendall Jenner's Birthday—Take a Look!

Forget long lines and constant walking—Kendall Jenner got all of Six Flags Magic Mountain to herself today!

The young E! star and her family rented the amusement park to celebrate Kendall's 18th birthday (her actual big day is on Sunday), and big sister Kim Kardashian documented some of the fun through a couple Keek videos.

"We're here for Kendall's birthday party and we rented out Magic Mountain. No one else is in the entire theme park but us and the people there to greet us," the newly engaged celeb said in the first video.

"But look, no one's even working in the concession stands. And we get to drive instead of walk. This is real lazy, but this is what Kendall wanted and it is a nice surprise for her and I'm excited for her. So happy birthday Kendall."

Yep, they were able to drive fro ... Read more »

Kerry Washington's SNL Promos Bring the Scandal

We already know she can command a room while wearing a flawless white pantsuit, but Kerry Washington's new SNL promos are a lovely reminder that she can bring the comedy heat too. The woman was in Peeples, for God's sake. This isn't her first time at the rodeo. Washington has such natural chemistry with Taran Killam, we can't help but hope that Kerry might get a visit from her brother…Tarry Washington. Oooo, scandal!

Bitch Stole My Look! Rita Wilson vs. Paloma Faith in Tom Ford

Tom Ford calls this his "Ka-Pow" gown, and there's no mistaking why.

Both Rita Wilson and Paloma Faith made an impact in the explosion-inspired ensemble. As much as we love the wild detail on both dresses, this is a case of a couture catch-22: the positive of such a bold style is that your look will be totally memorable, but that plus turns to a minus once someone else wears it...

Our gut instinct is to prefer Mrs. Tom Hank's more muted black approach. The embellished sparks are just as powerful but somehow less "out there" against the black.

Neil Patrick Harris: Coming Out Is a 'Very Individual Thing'

The coming out process is a very personal one and no one should be pushed into it, says Neil Patrick Harris.

"I don't think doing it in an exploitative way makes sense. I just feel like that whole world is very personal," the actor, 40, said Monday on Huffpost Live. "Here's a good analogy – if you're going to jump into the pool and you're not sure how to swim, it's probably not so effective to just push someone into the pool ... It's probably not the best way."

As for his own journey, Harris, who came out to PEOPLE in 2006, says he didn't want to cover up his love for his now fiancé, David Burtka.

"For me, I fell in love with a dude and started spending all my time with him. And therefore, you don't want to be suppressive of that," the How I Met Your Mother star explains. "As I started working more frequently, with more ... Read more »

LACMA to Honor Martin Scorsese, Screen ‘Rebel Without a Cause’

On Nov. 1, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art will unveil a fresh restoration of Nicholas Ray’s "Rebel Without a Cause” — just one of several recent LACMA events spotlighting the work of Martin Scorsese and his nonprofit preservation org, the Film Foundation.

The Gucci-sponsored restoration of "Rebel,” carried out by Warner Bros., demonstrates that popular pics can be just as susceptible to the effects of age as obscure ones. The original color negative had been badly faded and partly destroyed, owing to its use for repeated re-releases, while the stereo soundtrack master was erased and reused years ago.

On Nov. 2, the night after the "Rebel” screening, LACMA will honor both Scorsese and painter David Hockney at the museum’s third annual Art+Film Gala, a benefit reflecting the LACMA board’s newly enlightened view that film is art ... Read more »
