Iron Man 3 (2013)

Certificate PG-13 130 min   -   Action | Adventure | Fantasy | Sci-Fi

When Tony Stark's world is torn apart by a formidable terrorist called the Mandarin, he starts an odyssey of rebuilding and retribution.
Director:
Shane Black
Stars:
Robert Downey Jr., Guy Pearce, Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle

Tony Stark faced an unbeatable foe the last time out: the sophomore slump that was Iron Man - Omul de otel 2. Having succumbed to an ill-advised storyline that turned much of the spotlight on Stark's narcissism (or RDJ's, perhaps), the franchise first shook things up by bringing in fan-favorite Shane Black to write and direct this installment, which traffics in The Mandarin, Iron Man's toughest-ever opponent.

Graceland (2012)

84 min   -   Crime | Thriller

When a kidnapping goes wrong, a desperate father risks everything to save his daughter from the men who hold her captive.
Director:
Ron Morales
Stars:
Arnold Reyes, Menggie Cobarrubias, Dido De La Paz, Leon Miguel

A research trip in the Philippines steered director Ron Morales away from one story idea and toward this thriller that looks to reveal unexpected shades and tones of the country's organized crime syndicates. Instead of good and evil, Morales is looking more at situations where "have vs. have not" is a motivation for questionable deeds.

The Reluctant Fundamentalist (2012)

Certificate R 130 min   -   Thriller

A young Pakistani man is chasing corporate success on Wall Street. He finds himself embroiled in a conflict between his American Dream, a hostage crisis, and the enduring call of his family's homeland.
Director:
Mira Nair
Stars:
Riz Ahmed, Liev Schreiber, Kiefer Sutherland, Kate Hudson

As with The Namesake, here Mira Nair is concerned with the immigrant experience in the United States, though her source material - Mohsin Hamid's intimate novel - concerns a young, single man's life pre- and post-9/11. Riz Ahmed's lead performance has earned praise; reviews of Nair's direction, on the other hand, are middling - with most critics calling into question the decision to turn a character study into a thriller.

At Any Price (2012)

Certificate R 105 min   -   Drama | Thriller

A farming family's business is threatened by an unexpected crisis, further testing the relationship between a father and his rebellious son.
Director:
Ramin Bahrani
Stars:
Dennis Quaid, Zac Efron, Kim Dickens, Heather Graham

Part of me get this project in theory: a message movie designed to further advance the second stage of Zac Efron's acting career. The other part of me thinks this looks like Footloose without the fun and the best-selling soundtrack.

Arthur Newman (2012)

Certificate R 101 min   -   Comedy | Drama

A story of a man who fakes his own death and assumes a new identity in order to escape his life, who then moves in with a woman who is also trying to leave her past behind.
Director:
Dante Ariola
Stars:
Colin Firth, Emily Blunt, Anne Heche, Sterling Beaumon

Love the idea of Colin Firth and Emily Blunt together in a comedy with some dramatic, identity-shedding elements? Us too. Also compelling is the fact that the company releasing Arthur has partnered with BitTorrent -- a website formerly synonymous with piracy that is now going legit -- to promote the movie.

Kon-Tiki (2012)

Certificate PG-13 118 min   -   Adventure | History

Legendary explorer Thor Heyerdal's epic 4,300-mile crossing of the Pacific on a balsawood raft in 1947, in an effort prove that it was possible for South Americans to settle in Polynesia in pre-Columbian times.
Directors:
Joachim Rønning | Espen Sandberg
Stars:
Pål Sverre Hagen, Anders Baasmo Christiansen, Gustaf Skarsgård, Odd Magnus Williamson

The movie based on the adventures of Norwegian ethnographer and explorer Thor Heyerdal faced the seemingly impossible task of facing Amour in the Best Foreign Language Oscar race. Now off the awards circuit, this well-received new project can stand on its own merits. Co-directors Joachim Rönning and Espen Sandberg are set to make a Hollywood project next with a script currently titled Spectral.

Mud (2012)

Certificate PG-13 130 min   -   Drama

Two young boys encounter a fugitive and form a pact to help him evade the bounty hunters on his trail and to reunite him with his true love.
Director:
Jeff Nichols
Stars:
Matthew McConaughey, Tye Sheridan, Jacob Lofland, Sam Shepard

Since Matthew McConaughey suddenly is every critic's favor actor, look for his starring role to help make the new film from Jeff Nichols (whose last work, Take Shelter, really caught me on a second viewing) his highest-profile outing yet. We're thoroughly anticipating the boy-adventure and its similarities to David Gordon Green's early work. Hopefully Reese Witherspoon - would certainly had a newsworthy weekend, recently - will emerge with some much-needed cool factor, too.

The Big Wedding (2013)

Certificate R 89 min   -   Comedy

A long-divorced couple fakes being married as their family unites for a wedding.
Director:
Justin Zackham
Stars:
Robert De Niro, Diane Keaton, Katherine Heigl, Amanda Seyfried

The Bucket List put writer Justin Zackham on the Hollywood map, and his next to-do is also centered on older adults; this time, Diane Keaton and Robert De Niro, last seen together in Marvin's Room, play the divorced parents who fake a certain level of happiness as their adopted son's wedding approaches. At first consideration, I thought this was some sort of romantic comedy starring Katherine Heigl - a harder sell.

Pain & Gain (2013)

Certificate R 129 min   -   Action | Comedy | Crime | Drama

A trio of bodybuilders in Florida get caught up in an extortion ring and a kidnapping scheme that goes terribly wrong.
Director:
Michael Bay
Stars:
Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne Johnson, Anthony Mackie, Tony Shalhoub

Our main question would be for Michael Bay, and it would be: when was the last time you directed from an actual-real screenplay? This absurdist premise feels as though it could have sprung out from the Coen Bros. fully formed, but in fact it's a true story adapted by the writing team of Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, who have graduated from the crusty Narnia franchise and retooled themselves as Marvel specialists.

Dans la maison (2012)

Certificate R 105 min   -   Comedy | Drama | Mystery | Thriller

A high school French teacher gets increasingly drawn into a precocious student's increasingly transgressive story about his relationship with a friend's family.
Director:
François Ozon
Stars:
Fabrice Luchini, Vincent Schmitt, Ernst Umhauer, Kristin Scott Thomas

A voyeuristic thriller that features plenty of sex and a peep behind the curtains and under the covers of a seemingly perfect family - seen from the perspective of a young writer who wields a pen and paper instead of a laptop? With Kristin Scott Thomas also observing from the margins? By all appearance, this seems to be one of writer/director François Ozon's art-house breakthroughs.

Filly Brown (2012)

Certificate R 80 min   -   Drama | Music

A promising hip-hop rhymer from Los Angeles finds herself in a gray area when a record producer offers her a compromising shot at stardom.
Directors:
Youssef Delara | Michael D. Olmos
Stars:
Gina Rodriguez, Jenni Rivera, Lou Diamond Phillips, Edward James Olmos

Something tells me a relatively big opening weekend awaits this life-affirming, rhyme-soaked drama for which star Gina Rodriguez has earned strong reviews. It's the kind of story that Pantelion Films -- the distributor that proclaims itself to be the first major Latino studio in Hollywood and has an output deal with Lionsgate -- will know just how to market effectively.

The Lords of Salem (2012)

Certificate R 101 min   -   Horror | Thriller

Heidi, a radio DJ, is sent a box containing a record -- a "gift from the Lords." The sounds within the grooves trigger flashbacks of her town's violent past. Is Heidi going mad, or are the Lords back to take revenge on Salem, Massachusetts?
Director:
Rob Zombie
Stars:
Sheri Moon Zombie, Meg Foster, Bruce Davison, Jeff Daniel Phillips

A polarizing Rob Zombie film is not a bad thing, especially when its believers liken it to the work of Kenneth Anger and Roman Polanski. Seems as though Zombie has shifted gears in a way that also aligns with Ti West's pacing with The Innkeepers and The House of the Devil, so people who want more of RZ's cartoon-horror psychedelia might want to pass on his latest. And genre purists who think Zombie is a complete hack based on his prior body of work might be intrigued by the presence of ... Read more »

Director:

Into the White (2012)

Certificate R 100 min   -   Action | Drama | War
Norway, WWII: A group of British and German soldiers find themselves stranded in the wilderness after an aircraft battle. Finding shelter in the same cabin, they realize the only way to survive the winter is to place the rules of war aside.
Director:
Petter Næss
Stars:
Florian Lukas, David Kross, Lachlan Nieboer, Stig Henrik Hoff

A supporting appearance by Rupert Grint has helped the Norwegian import gain some Stateside attention. You might remember seeing director Petter Næss's name in the news over the last handful of years as Hollywood has long eyed his note-perfect comedy Elling for an English-language remake.

Disconnect (2012)

Certificate R 115 min   -   Drama | Thriller

A drama centered on a group of people searching for human connections in today's wired world.
Director:
Henry Alex Rubin
Stars:
Jason Bateman, Jonah Bobo, Haley Ramm, Hope Davis

Murderball director Henry Alex Rubin makes his feature-film debut with this cautionary tale - a Crash for the digital age if you will (and if you want). Fashion-lovers should keep their eyes open for a sleazy appearance by designer Marc Jacobs, who apparently tries to lure young beauties into his online porn empire.

The Angels' Share (2012)

101 min   -   Comedy | Crime | Drama

Narrowly avoiding jail, new dad Robbie vows to turn over a new leaf. A visit to a whisky distillery inspires him and his mates to seek a way out of their hopeless lives.
Director:
Ken Loach
Stars:
Paul Brannigan, John Henshaw, Roger Allam, Gary Maitland

We know that Ken Loach is concerned with art and not commerce -- he and his producer Rebecca O'Brien know how to raise a budget -- but if you're at all intrigued by what a Loach commercial breakthrough might look like, this warmer-hearted comedy could be it, especially if word-of-mouth catches on with older audiences. There's a great story to hear about the real-life reform of lead actor Paul Brannigan.

It's a Disaster (2012)

Certificate R 88 min   -   Comedy | Drama

Four couples meet for Sunday brunch only to discover they are stuck in a house together as the world may be about to end.
Director:
Todd Berger
Stars:
Rachel Boston, Laura Adkin, Kevin M. Brennan, David Cross

Remember when Twitter announced its Vine app a couple months ago? Standards-bucking indie distributor Oscilloscope Pictures took advantage of the media attention by announcing it would first release Todd Berger's apocalypse-by-brunchtime comedy in 6-second segments over the new technology. Surely it attracted more notice for Berger's highest-profile work to date, and since we can never get enough of end-of-the-world scenarios, we expect the film will reach a sizable audience in time. Bet you Berger is attached to a studio comedy by year's end.

Antiviral (2012)

108 min   -   Horror | Sci-Fi | Thriller

After becoming infected with the virus that killed superstar Hannah Geist, Syd March must unravel the mystery surrounding her death to save his own life.
Director:
Brandon Cronenberg
Stars:
Caleb Landry Jones, Lisa Berry, Sarah Gadon, Malcolm McDowell

The spawn of David Cronenberg looks to his father's early films for inspiration in what's being celebrated as a highly stylized work of science fiction with both neo-noir and horror elements. Brandon Cronenberg's directorial debut has its advocates and detractors, with critics on both sides saying the young man has a promising career in front of him.

To the Wonder (2012)

Certificate R 112 min   -   Drama | Romance

After falling in love in Paris, Marina and Neil come to Oklahoma, where problems arise. Their church's Spanish-born pastor struggles with his faith, while Neil encounters a woman from his childhood.
Director:
Terrence Malick
Stars:
Ben Affleck, Olga Kurylenko, Javier Bardem, Rachel McAdams

Terrence Malick is one of the least time-bound directors in history, so the short wait for his follow-up to The Tree of Life is worth noting, as is the divisive reception the film received at its Venice premiere last year. But this should come as no surprise given Malick's unconventional approach to, well, everything. The cattiest thing we've ever heard Ben Affleck 2.0 say came at the expense of Malick's on-set direction, which seemed more focused on capturing natural elements than human interactions. The subject matter definitely ... Read more »

'SNL' spoofs Wes Anderson with 'The Midnight Coterie Of Sinister Intruders'

There was widespread skepticism as to whether Edward Norton could pull off hosting "Saturday Night Live" this week.  Sure, Norton is a talented, Oscar-nominated actor, but comedy isn't the first thing you associate with the star of "American History X," "The Illusionist" and "Fight Club."  Of course, Norton did just star in Wes Anderson's "Moonrise Kingdom" and will appear in the director's next film, "The Grand Budapest Hotel," next spring.  Hmm, wonder who came up with the idea to film a spot-on spoof of Anderson films appropriately titled "The Midnight Coterie of Sinister Intruders?"  And why do we think Anderson won't think it's that funny? (Oh, wait. He lives in Paris. He'll never see it anyway).

Lou Reed, ‘Walk on the Wild Side’ Singer, Dead at 71

The influential rock icon underwent a liver transplant in May

Singer-songwriter Lou Reed, whose "Walk on the Wild Side” became a rock classic and whose work as a solo artist and with the Velvet Underground inspired generations of punks and indie rockers, has died at the age of 71.

Although he initially studied to become a poet, Reed went on to a music career that spanned five decades. The news of his death was reported Sunday by Rolling Stone. The cause  was not reported, but Reed underwent a liver transplant in May.

A fixture on the New York rock scene who worked with Andy Warhol, Reed’s powerful guitar work and energy combined with his raw lyrical message to create a unique style that inspired rockers around the world. The Velvet Underground never achieved wide commercial success, but was considered seminal and in 1996 the band ... Read more »
