Black Rock (2012) Certificate R 83 min - Horror | Thriller Three childhood friends set aside their personal issues and reunite for a girls' weekend on a remote island off the coast of Maine. One wrong move turns their weekend getaway into a deadly fight for survival. Director: Katie Aselton Stars: Katie Aselton, Lake Bell, Kate Bosworth, Will Bouvier At some point in the future, I sense the horror films made by the Duplass brothers and their contemporaries will be worshiped by a larger set of the population. For now, they do just fine at film festivals and, apparently, on VOD. Some have laughed with Katie Aselton's second directorial outing (which was written by her husband, Mark Duplass, during a day trip that went awry), while others have dismissed it for not going far enough as a proto-feminist thriller. &nbs

Augustine (2012) 102 min - Drama A look at the relationship between pioneering 19th century French neurologist Dr. Jean-Martin Charcot and his star teenage patient, a kitchen maid who is left partially paralyzed after a seizure. Director: Alice Winocour Stars: Vincent Lindon, Stéphan Wojtowicz, Soko, Chiara Mastroianni Given its subject matter, Alice Winocour's film earned comparisons to A Dangerous Method and Hysteria on the festival circuit. Hopefully it can stand on its own merits in what could be a breakout role for the young actress Soko, who plays the titular character.

Director: Craig Zisk Stars: Julianne Moore, Michael Angarano, Greg Kinnear, Lily Collins Seasoned TV director Craig Zisk assembled an indie-loving cast for his feature-film debut, and even though the premise sounds a bit cribbed from a handful of different movies, we're interested in husband-and-wife writing duo Dan and Stacy Chariton, who have Marvel Comics credits to their names and thank-yous from Rian Johnson for every single one of his films. &n

The Expatriate (2012) Certificate R 100 min - Action | Thriller An ex-CIA agent and his estranged daughter are forced on the run when his employers erase all records of his existence, and mark them both for termination as part of a wide-reaching international conspiracy. Director: Philipp Stölzl Stars: Aaron Eckhart, Nick Alachiotis, Liana Liberato, Olga Kurylenko We just saw President Aaron Eckhart get saved by Gerard Butler in Cod Rosu la Casa Alba, but Erased, which has been sitting on the shelf for about a year, finds Eckhart in active survival mode to save his estranged daughter's life, as well as his own. Though none of this sounds original on paper, Eckhart is great to look at, director Philipp Stolzl knows tension and drama (see: Nordwand), and can you really go wrong with Olga Kurylenko playing Eckhart's former lover who wants him dead as a multina

Frances Ha (2012) Certificate R 86 min - Comedy | Drama A story that follows a New York woman (who doesn't really have an apartment), apprentices for a dance company (though she's not really a dancer), and throws herself headlong into her dreams, even as their possible reality dwindles. Director: Noah Baumbach Stars: Greta Gerwig, Mickey Sumner, Adam Driver, Michael Zegen Looks like Greta Gerwig gets to star in a Greenberg of her own making, as she and director Noah Baumbach co-wrote this screenplay together in secret, and have created a work that has been as well received as Baumbach's first two films, Kicking and Screaming and The Squid and the Whale. We still don't know if Gerwig will ever have a genuine breakthrough; that said, she's earning most of the praise here.

Star Trek Into Darkness (2013) Certificate PG-13 132 min - Action | Adventure | Sci-Fi After the crew of the Enterprise find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. Director: J.J. Abrams Stars: Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Benedict Cumberbatch With Benedict Cumberbatch (aka Sherlock Holmes) playing a new villain that may/ahem, may not/but probably does have a connection to Trek history and Peter Weller (aka RoboCop) joining the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise in a major way, what else do we need to make J.J. Abrams's return to Roddenberry space the most anticipated sequel of 2013? A Klingon subplot? You got it. More Spock Prime? Check. William Shatner cameo? Worldwide domination? Paramount is working on that. Our

Java Heat (2013) Certificate R 104 min - Action | Crime | Drama | Thriller A Muslim detective teams with an American posing as a graduate student to find the man behind a series of deadly terrorist bombings in Indonesia. Director: Conor Allyn Stars: Kellan Lutz, Verdi Solaiman, Mickey Rourke, Ario Bayu The guys who helped populate the Twilight universe have at least a few years of job offers coming their respective ways, and Kellan Lutz is saying yes to as many as he can while he's still under 30 and tight-bodied. Solely going off of Java Heat's incredibly confusing trailer, we're thinking Lutz's reunion with his Immortals co-star Mickey Rourke might make that movie seem worthy of a Criterion Collection release in comparison. Thing is: he was rather good in Generation Kill and I hope some filmmakers remember that. &nb

Sightseers (2012) 88 min - Adventure | Comedy | Crime | Horror Chris wants to show girlfriend Tina his world, but events soon conspire against the couple and their dream caravan holiday takes a very wrong turn. Director: Ben Wheatley Stars: Alice Lowe, Kenneth Hadley, Steve Oram, Eileen Davies Director Ben Wheatley's fan base has grown as his two previous works, Down Terrace and Kill List, have remained topics of discussion in film circles. I'm thinking Sightseers might be the easiest of his movies to embrace since vigilante justice is doled out to ill-mannered jerks in brutal but cartoonish bouts. &

Peeples (2013) Certificate PG-13 95 min - Comedy | Romance Sparks fly when Wade Walker crashes the Peeples annual reunion in the Hamptons to ask for their precious daughter Grace's hand in marriage. Director: Tina Gordon Chism Stars: Craig Robinson, Kerry Washington, David Alan Grier, S. Epatha Merkerson Tyler Perry expands his brand by mentoring screenwriter Tina Gordon Chism (Drumline, ATL) for her directorial debut, which definitely sounds like it will ride the line between Perry's full-bore family-centric comedy and his penchant for slightly more serious life lessons. But, hey, anyone who sees more in Craig Robinson than an ensemble or background player has my vote of confidence.

'Lone Survivor' Enlists Mark Wahlberg, Navy Seal for Emotional Screening Marcus Luttrell, whose story is told in the Universal awards contender, joined the cast for a Q&A. said Wahlberg: "I never felt more pressure playing someone, but I never felt more pride either.” Universal gave a sneak peak of its war movie Lone Survivor on Thursday night, signaling its intent to position the film as an awards contender. But as riveting as the movie was to those who saw it, the evening belonged to Marcus Luttrell, the former Navy SEAL whose experiences the movie recounts. "To talk about how hard we worked is bullshit,” said Mark Walhberg, who portrays Luttrell in the Pete Berg-directed movie, "not compared to what he and the others did.” Walhberg, Ben Foster, Taylor Kitsch and Emile Hirsch star as members of SEAL Team 10 that, on a mission to capture a Taliban leader in 2005, came across

Fashion Face-Off, Divas Edition: Celine Dion vs. Kelly Rowland in Anthony Vaccarello Oh no she didn't! We figure that's something a true diva like Céline Dion or Kelly Rowland would say upon finding that her competitor stole her couture. Yes, these are two different versions of the same Anthony Vaccarello design, but in the land of the A-list singer, they're way too close for comfort. We're not surprised that the "Loved Me Back To Life" singer and X Factor judge both picked this hot black look, but now they're paying for their perfect taste with a battle of who wore it best? Right off the bat we're in love with Celine's LBD version of the look. The position of the metallic circles adds the perfect touch but keeps the shape in tact. But outside of that detail, the look gets a little boring. Yes, there's that one-sleeve action, but the former queen of Vegas could use an accessory or two.<

Aaron Taylor-Johnson Finally Confirmed for The Avengers: Age of Ultron The Wrap reports that Kick-Ass star Aaron Taylor-Johnson has been confirmed to play Quicksilver in The Avengers: Age of Ultron. This casting has been rumored since the summer; however, it apparently took a while for him to figure out a schedule to both shoot the movie and promote the upcoming Godzilla reboot. Quicksilver has super speed and is the twin brother of Scarlet Witch, who will be played by Elizabeth Olsen. Quicksilver is Magneto’s kid, so he’ll actually also be featured in X-Men: Days of Future Past, ironically played by Taylor-Johnson’s Kick-Ass co-star Evan Peters. Somewhere, Christopher Mintz-Plasse is asking people if they need him to play Quicksilver. Sadly, there have been no takers, yet.
