Leonardo DiCaprio’s ‘Wolf of Wall Street’ Set to Open Christmas Day
Paramount will release Martin Scorsese’s awards hopeful this year as a holiday treat
Paramount Pictures will release Martin Scorsese’s "The Wolf of Wall Street” nationwide on Christmas Day, an individual familiar with the project has told TheWrap.
Paramount had no comment.
Leonardo DiCaprio stars alongside Jonah Hill, Matthew McConaughey, Jon Bernthal, Cristin Milioti, Margot Robbie, Jean Dujardin, Kyle Chandler, Shea Whigham, Joanna Lumley, Jake Hoffman and Scorsese’s fellow filmmakers Rob Reiner, Jon Favreau and Spike Jonze.
The movie had been scheduled to open Nov. 15, though Paramount was forced to delay the movie so Scorsese and editor Thelma Schoonmaker could whittle down the running time to three hours or less.
"Wolf of Wall Street” will now open against Fox’s "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty,” Universal’s "47 Ronin,” WB’s "Grudge Match,” Sony’s nation-wide expansion of "American Hustle” and Open Road’s Justin Bieber documentary "Believe,” among several other films opening in limited release.
The decision indicates that Paramount will delay its franchise hopeful "Jack Ryan” to 2014, as the studio will also have "Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues” in theaters over the holidays.
The Christmas Day release date for "Wolf of Wall Street” mirrors that of Paramount’s 2008 awards hopeful "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” which also featured an A-list star and a long running time. That movie went on to earn 13 Oscar nominations, winning three.
Paramount is expected to campaign "Wolf of Wall Street” for Best Picture, Best Director (Scorsese), Best Adapted Screenplay (Terence Winter), Best Actor (DiCaprio) and Best Supporting Actor (Hill), as well as many below-the-line categories.
